Nigeria Customs Service Seizes 60,000 Litres of Petrol in Katsina
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) recently intercepted a tanker carrying 60,000 litres of petrol, which was suspected to be heading toward a border area in Katsina State. The operation took place on September 30 along the Jibia Road, where the NCS’s special task force, known as Operation Whirlwind, conducted a coordinated patrol.
According to reports, the National Coordinator of the task force, Kola Oladeji, disclosed the details during the handover of the seized tanker to the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) in Katsina. Oladeji was represented by Assistant Comptroller Sa’ad Isah-Yahaya, who oversees operations in the Kano/Jigawa and Katsina axis.
The interception was part of a broader effort to combat the smuggling of petroleum products and ensure compliance with national energy regulations. The NCS emphasized that the operation aimed to protect Nigeria’s economic interests and prevent the illicit diversion of fuel.
“The tanker was apprehended due to a fake manifest and improper documentation,” said Oladeji, who highlighted the importance of maintaining strict controls over the movement of petroleum products. “This operation is a decisive step in curbing smuggling activities and safeguarding the nation’s energy security.”
He reiterated the NCS’s commitment to upholding government directives against fuel smuggling and ensuring that all petroleum products intended for domestic use remain within the country. The handover of the seized goods to NMDPRA was seen as a demonstration of inter-agency collaboration and a strong message against economic sabotage.
“Together, we are sending a clear signal that any attempt to undermine the nation’s energy distribution framework will not be tolerated,” Oladeji stated.
Collaboration Between Agencies
Receiving the seized tanker, the NMDPRA Coordinator in Katsina State, Mohammed Omar, praised the NCS for its vigilance and cooperation with other regulatory bodies. He emphasized the significance of such partnerships in maintaining transparency and accountability within the downstream petroleum sector.
Omar noted that the NMDPRA remains dedicated to monitoring and enforcing compliance in the industry. “Such synergy is crucial in sanitizing the sector and preventing illegal activities that could harm the economy,” he added.
The operation also underscores the importance of continuous efforts to detect and stop the smuggling of petroleum products. By working together, agencies like the NCS and NMDPRA can strengthen the country’s energy infrastructure and protect its resources from exploitation.
