Denmark Reinforces Commitment to Nigeria’s Maritime Development

The Government of Denmark has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the growth and development of Nigeria’s maritime industry, while also exploring new areas for economic collaboration. This assurance was made by the Danish Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Jens Ole Bach Jansen, during a courtesy visit to the headquarters of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) in Lagos.

Jansen highlighted the long-standing diplomatic and economic relations between Denmark and Nigeria, emphasizing that Danish government agencies and private companies have invested significantly in Nigeria’s maritime sector for decades. He expressed optimism about the future of the partnership, particularly in areas such as seafarer training and maritime security.

NIMASA Welcomes Danish Engagement

Welcoming the delegation, NIMASA Director General, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, commended the Danish Government for its sustained engagement with Nigeria’s maritime sector. He stated, “On behalf of the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy and the Nigerian Government, I extend our appreciation to the Danish Government for its long-term partnership and support for our maritime industry. Danish companies have made notable contributions to port development and operational efficiency, and we believe this collaboration will continue to thrive.”

Mobereola emphasized that the partnership between Nigeria and Denmark is built on mutual trust and shared goals, with both nations working together to strengthen the maritime sector.

Key Areas of Cooperation

The cooperation between Denmark and Nigeria spans several key areas, including capacity building and professional training in maritime security. Both countries are also working on joint initiatives to enhance digital infrastructure within Nigeria’s maritime domain.

Some of the notable collaborations include:

  • Port Development:Danish firms such as APM Terminals have made major investments in port infrastructure across Lagos, Onne, and Kano. These investments have contributed to improved logistics and trade efficiency in these regions.
  • Training Programs:Denmark is supporting advanced training programs like the “Ship-in-a-Box” (SIAB) simulator project, which is implemented in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). This initiative aims to strengthen the operational capacity of Nigerian maritime law enforcement officers in Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure (VBSS) operations.

Future Prospects

With the ongoing collaboration, there is a growing potential for further expansion in various sectors of the maritime industry. The focus on training and technology is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing Nigeria’s maritime capabilities.

As both nations continue to build on their existing partnerships, the future looks promising for increased economic cooperation and sustainable development in the maritime sector.
