“They Waved Me Down”: Suspects Arrested in Arua Highway Robbery

Arua Police Arrest Two Suspects in Highway Robbery Case

Police in the Arua district have made a significant breakthrough in a recent highway robbery case. The incident involved a vehicle carrying relief food intended for the Palorinya Refugee Settlement, located in the Moyo area of the West Nile sub-region.

The driver of the trailer, identified as Abdul Aziz, provided police with a detailed account of what transpired on the day of the robbery. He was traveling along the Arua-Nebbi highway heading towards Arua when he noticed a group of individuals armed with machetes at the Kamukamu trading center. This location is known for frequent highway robberies, making it a high-risk area for drivers.

As Aziz continued on his journey, the group approached him and attempted to stop his vehicle. However, he chose not to comply, which led the suspects to take matters into their own hands. They forced their way onto the moving trailer and began unloading bags of posho, a staple maize meal commonly used in the region.

Aziz, who was based in Kyengera, Kampala, found himself helpless behind the wheel. He immediately contacted the police, but by the time the authorities arrived, the suspects had already abandoned the trailer and fled into the surrounding bush.

Arrests and Ongoing Investigations

Josephine Angucia, the North West Nile region Police spokesperson, confirmed that two suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident. The individuals are Godwin Asara and Brian Sabute, both residents of Ocoko parish in Ajia sub-county, Arua district.

Angucia explained that a team of police officers, led by the district police commander, responded swiftly to the scene. They conducted a thorough search of the nearby bushes in an effort to locate the suspects. At around 6 a.m. on Friday, a vehicle (Harrier Reg No. UAW 012A) carrying four occupants was intercepted. It was discovered that the vehicle contained four bags of posho, which were believed to be the stolen relief food.

Following this discovery, the two suspects were apprehended. Additionally, a motorcycle found in their possession was seized and is currently being held at the Arua Police Station in Odumi.

Current Status of the Case

Despite the arrests, the investigation is still ongoing. Authorities are working to gather more evidence and determine if there are any other individuals involved in the robbery. The police have emphasized their commitment to ensuring justice is served and preventing such incidents from occurring in the future.

The case highlights the persistent challenges faced by law enforcement in regions where highway robberies are common. It also underscores the importance of community vigilance and cooperation with the police to maintain safety and security on the roads.
