The Role of GERD in Shaping Africa’s Future
Addis Ababa, November 7, 2025 – The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) plays a crucial role in promoting regional integration, driving sustainable growth, and transforming the African continent. This sentiment was expressed by Kwabena Ayirebi, the Operations Managing Director of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), during an exclusive interview.
The GERD, which is the largest hydroelectric power plant on the continent, has the potential to facilitate energy integration across the region through power exports. It is also expected to foster stability, cooperation, and shared prosperity among neighboring countries.
Ayirebi emphasized that Ethiopia, as one of the largest countries on the continent with a rich historical legacy, must lead the transformation of the African continent. He noted that when large economies grow and achieve significant transformations, it creates a ripple effect that benefits surrounding countries.
A Catalyst for Industrialization and Trade
According to Ayirebi, the GERD represents a significant opportunity for Ethiopia to make strides in industrialization and manufacturing. These developments could feed into the African Continental Free Trade Area, further enhancing economic collaboration across the continent.
He highlighted that the positive outlook surrounding the dam aligns with Afreximbank’s mission to support such transformative projects. The bank is actively seeking opportunities to contribute to the continent’s development.
Energy Independence and Economic Reforms
Ayirebi pointed out that it is encouraging to see countries taking ownership of their energy landscapes. He stressed that energy independence holds great potential to accelerate economic reforms within a country like Ethiopia.
For the Banking Operations Managing Director, energy independence is vital across the continent. It is seen as a critical factor in achieving sustainable growth. “There is no way we can transform this continent without energy, and that is why projects like the GERD are so important,” he said.
Commitment to Partnership and Development
Ayirebi reaffirmed Afreximbank’s commitment to continue supporting Ethiopia in its journey toward industrial transformation. “We look to continue to be a strong partner for this country,” he emphasized.
The GERD is not just a source of clean, renewable energy; it is also a key driver of regional integration. Its impact is intended to power economic development and reduce reliance on imported fuels in the region.
