Lagos Lawmaker Demands End to Insurgency

Calls for Global Collaboration in Combating Insurgency

A Lagos lawmaker, Adewale Adedeji, has called on Nigeria’s service chiefs to meet expectations in ending the ongoing insurgency within the country. Adedeji, who represents the Ifako-Ijaiye Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly, emphasized the importance of global collaboration in addressing insecurity and supporting President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

His remarks followed statements by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who threatened military action against terror groups in Nigeria over the alleged mass killing of Christians. Adedeji stated that Nigeria’s new service chiefs must do everything necessary to bring an end to the insurgent activities. He also urged Trump to reconsider his stance on Nigeria, highlighting that Tinubu understands the security challenges facing the country and is working to enhance national stability.

Trump had previously labeled Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” on social media. Shortly after this declaration, he instructed congressional Republicans to investigate the matter and report back to him. On Saturday, Trump announced that he had ordered the U.S. Department of War to prepare for possible action in Nigeria due to the alleged killings of Christians.

Adedeji noted that President Tinubu, as a father figure, was not pleased with the actions of bandits and terrorists, who have attempted to undermine the gains of the current administration, similar to how they affected previous governments. He added that one of the reasons the President appointed the newly appointed service chiefs was to ensure the end of insecurity in the country. The current administration, according to Adedeji, will never tolerate terrorists or their sponsors.

He praised the Tinubu administration for its efforts in implementing reforms across various sectors. Adedeji highlighted that the administration has been creating more economic opportunities for progress. Different data have shown a drop in inflation for the first time in years. Additionally, the administration has attracted multi-billion dollar investments while working to revive struggling industries and maintain Nigeria’s position as the giant of Africa.

Economic indicators continue to show that the government is on the right path, which has been reflected in the country’s currency gaining strength. For the first time, sub-national governments are experiencing financial comfort due to increased economic power.

Thus, Adedeji argued that what Nigeria needs at this moment is global cooperation from the United States and other nations to benefit its citizens.
