Ghana Provides Humanitarian Aid to Jamaica, Cuba, and Sudan

Humanitarian Aid from Ghana to Affected Nations

Ghana has made a significant humanitarian contribution to countries affected by natural disasters. The donation, valued at GH¢10 million, is being sent to Sudan, which is dealing with ongoing conflicts, as well as Jamaica and Cuba, which were hit by severe hurricanes. This gesture reflects the solidarity and goodwill of the Ghanaian government and its people towards their international neighbors.

The distribution of the aid will follow a specific ratio: 50% for Jamaica, 30% for Cuba, and 20% for Sudan. This allocation ensures that the most severely affected regions receive the necessary support.

The items included in the donation are diverse and aimed at addressing immediate needs. They consist of:

  • 2,400 bags of Ghana rice
  • 540 bags of sugar
  • 377 boxes of medication
  • 500 mattresses
  • 500 pillows
  • 100 cartons of gari mix
  • 50,000 pieces of t-shirts

In addition to these essentials, there are also three 20-footer containers of chocolate products, 20 pieces of 500-liter water tanks, 20 hand wash stations, 10 emergency portal toilets, and various types of clothing.

Impact of Climate Change and Natural Disasters

President John Dramani Mahama highlighted the increasing frequency of extreme weather events due to climate change during the presentation of the donation. He emphasized that such events have become more common, particularly in the Caribbean region.

” hurricanes and similar events have become like the game of Russian roulette,” he said, referring to the unpredictability and danger associated with such natural disasters.

One notable event was Hurricane Melissa, which struck on October 28 as a Category 5 storm—the highest category possible. President Mahama described the devastation caused by this hurricane, especially in Jamaica, where it led to loss of life and extensive damage. The destruction continued into Cuba, causing further suffering and economic losses estimated in the billions of dollars.

A Symbol of Solidarity and Friendship

The donation serves as a symbol of Ghana’s deep solidarity, respect, and fraternity with the affected nations. It reflects the country’s commitment to supporting its neighbors during challenging times. President Mahama expressed that the aid was given in the spirit of camaraderie and goodwill towards the peoples of Jamaica, Cuba, and Sudan.

He also thanked the various businesses and individuals who contributed to the donation. These include companies such as Latex Foam, Ash Form, MTN, Farm Masters Global, Twelion Company, Dignity DTRR Apparel, Pharmanova Ghana, and Atlantic Liifesciences Ltd. Other contributors include Mancwa Commodities Ltd, Duraplast Ltd, Terraprime Group Ghana Ltd, Mid Atlantic Group, Cocobod, and Cocoa Processing Company, as well as businessman Mr. Ibrahim Mahama.
