Border Guard Bangladesh Denies Allegations of Supporting Armed Groups
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has strongly denied allegations made by the Arakan Army (AA) and the United League of Arakan (ULA), which claim that BGB supports armed groups such as RSO/ARSA. In a statement released on Friday, the paramilitary force emphasized its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of integrity and professionalism in border security.
The statement addressed an incident that occurred on November 5 in the Palongkhali area, near BRM 19, within Bangladesh’s territory. According to BGB, this event highlighted their dedication to peace and border protection. During the incident, three armed AA members crossed the zero line and fired shots at BGB personnel without any provocation. One bullet hit a BGB border post, indicating hostile intentions from the AA side.
Despite the aggression, BGB personnel exercised restraint and responded with warning shots, resulting in no casualties or injuries. The statement also noted that previous incidents involving AA members have led to bullets hitting civilian homes and shops, occasionally injuring civilians. Additionally, landmines planted by AA have caused fatalities, including one BGB soldier in the past.
Unfounded Claims and Propaganda Efforts
BGB stressed that the allegations against them are entirely baseless. The claims that BGB supports RSO/ARSA or other Rohingya armed groups are part of a deliberate effort to tarnish the force’s reputation. These false narratives are likely aimed at undermining BGB’s efforts to curb smuggling and narcotics trafficking from Rakhine across the border.
The presence of Yaba, a dangerous drug, has been significantly reduced due to BGB’s proactive measures. This has disrupted the operations of AA, which relies on smuggling for logistics and supplies. As a result, AA is allegedly spreading false information to defame BGB and Bangladesh.
BGB also highlighted that each time it responds to misinformation, AA and ULA launch another round of propaganda. This pattern of behavior is expected to continue, but BGB remains committed to its duty of ensuring a secure and peaceful border environment.
Commitment to National Security
BGB categorically stated that it provides no support to any Rakhine-based or Rohingya armed groups. The force’s primary concern is safeguarding the sovereignty and integrity of Bangladesh. It also denounced rumors about Indian encroachment in Lalmonirhat, emphasizing its focus on protecting national borders.
The statement urged AA and ULA to stop spreading propaganda that damages BGB’s reputation. Such actions do not contribute to legitimacy or peace but instead hinder trust and stability along the border. BGB remains dedicated to fulfilling its constitutional duties and calls on all parties to act responsibly and truthfully in public statements.
Addressing Tensions and Provocations
BGB expressed disappointment with the behavior of AA and ULA, which it described as regrettable. The actions of these groups include acts of provocation and deliberate attempts to escalate tensions along the border. The force reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the dignity and security of Bangladesh’s borders.
It promised to counter any false narratives with factual and transparent information. BGB remains resolute in its mission to maintain a peaceful and secure border environment, despite ongoing challenges posed by misinformation and propaganda.
