Kano Govt and FRSC Unite for Safer Roads

Kano State Government’s Commitment to Safer Roads

The Kano State Government has reaffirmed its dedication to making roads safer and reducing traffic accidents through a strategic partnership with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC). This commitment was highlighted during a town hall meeting organized by the FRSC Kano Command, where Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf emphasized the administration’s resolve to protect lives and property through improved road infrastructure and efficient traffic management.

The Governor was represented at the event by the State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Adamu Aliyu Kibiya. In his address, the Commissioner outlined the government’s significant investments in solar traffic lights, street lighting, and the rehabilitation of roads throughout the state. Additionally, efforts have been made to enhance the skills and capabilities of traffic personnel to ensure smoother and more effective road operations.

“These initiatives are evident in the installation of solar traffic lights, the illumination of streets, and the restoration of roads across every corner of the state,” the Commissioner stated. He also referenced the theme of this year’s campaign, “Take Responsibility for Your Safety,” which serves as a reminder that road safety begins with individual responsibility.

Governor Yusuf pointed out that the timing of the campaign is crucial, particularly during the ember months when there is usually a rise in road accidents due to increased travel, impatience, and violations of traffic rules. He urged drivers to avoid speeding, overloading vehicles, using mobile phones while driving, and unnecessary night travel.

In his speech, Dr. Danyaro Ali Yakasai, the Special Adviser to the Governor and former Corps Marshal, called for clearer regulations governing the operations of tricycle (KEKE-NAPEP) operators. He cited research indicating that many road distractions are linked to these drivers.

Key Initiatives and Collaborative Efforts

The Kano State Government has taken several steps to improve road safety:

  • Infrastructure Development: The government has invested in the installation of solar-powered traffic lights and street lights, ensuring better visibility and control on major roads.
  • Road Rehabilitation: Extensive efforts have been made to repair and maintain roads across the state, aiming to reduce the risk of accidents caused by poor road conditions.
  • Training and Capacity Building: Traffic personnel have undergone training to enhance their ability to manage traffic efficiently and respond to incidents promptly.

Call for Public Cooperation

Governor Yusuf emphasized the importance of public cooperation in achieving safer roads. He encouraged all road users to adhere to traffic rules and regulations, highlighting that individual actions play a critical role in preventing accidents.

Dr. Yakasai further stressed the need for clear guidelines for tricycle operators, as they are often involved in road incidents. He suggested that stricter enforcement of existing regulations could help reduce the number of accidents caused by such vehicles.

Ongoing Campaigns and Awareness

The FRSC Kano Command continues to conduct awareness campaigns aimed at educating the public about road safety. These campaigns focus on promoting responsible driving habits and encouraging a culture of safety among all road users.

Future Goals and Challenges

Looking ahead, the Kano State Government plans to expand its road safety initiatives, including the introduction of advanced traffic monitoring systems and the implementation of stricter penalties for traffic violations. However, challenges remain, such as the need for more resources and the coordination between various agencies involved in road safety.

The collaboration between the state government and the FRSC is expected to play a vital role in addressing these challenges and ensuring long-term improvements in road safety across Kano State.
