Uganda Waragi at 60: A Tribute to Uganda’s People and Spirit

A Celebration of Ugandan Spirit and Resilience

The day begins with a vibrant energy that transforms the usual into something extraordinary. In Kampala, the streets come alive with a procession of boda bodas, weaving through the city like a living tapestry of color and motion. These two-wheeled vehicles are more than just a means of transport; they are a symbol of the Ugandan spirit—fearless, creative, and ever-moving. As they pass by, they bring smiles, waves, and an infectious sense of joy that fills the air.

This celebration is not just about a brand but about Uganda itself—a nation that has grown and evolved over six decades. It’s a tribute to the people, their stories, and the shared pride that unites them. The occasion marks 60 years of Uganda Waragi, a spirit that has become synonymous with the country’s identity and resilience.

Boda Boda: The Pulse of Kampala

If Kampala has a heartbeat, it beats on two wheels. Boda bodas are an essential part of daily life in Uganda, serving as school buses, delivery vehicles, and even mobile farms. They connect people, move goods, and carry out tasks that no one else could imagine. Their presence is a testament to the ingenuity and hustle that define Ugandans.

To mark this milestone, Uganda Waragi partnered with the boda boda community, recognizing their deep connection to the nation’s rhythm. This collaboration with Safe Boda is symbolic, reflecting the same creativity and determination that Uganda Waragi has championed for six decades.

“We chose to celebrate with the boda boda community because they are integral to our way of life, a true reflection of Uganda’s spirit of creativity and hustle,” said Hilda Aguti, Marketing Manager at Mainstream Spirits, Uganda Breweries Limited. “Just like Uganda Waragi, they connect us; they move us; they are part of what binds us together as Ugandans.”

A City Alive with Tradition and Flavor

In Wandegeya, salon women were busy with their daily routines when they received surprise packages filled with joy. Nearby, Sula Birungo, master of Kikalaayi Chicken, filled the air with the irresistible aroma of her cooking. Jib the rolex guy rolled up Uganda’s most loved street meal on a roadside pan, offering a classic that satisfies every craving.

In Nakawa Market, food vendors paused mid-service to serve up their famous meere yoona dishes, a taste of home that fuels the nation’s spirit. Nalongo Kinene smiled proudly, embodying the daily hustle that keeps Uganda nourished. On the streets, boda boda riders and taxi drivers received their gifts with laughter, becoming the living heartbeat of Kampala’s daily rhythm.

Across the city, icons like VJ Jingo, who brought global cinema to local audiences, also joined in the celebration.

A Shared Meal, A Shared Joy

By afternoon, the procession ended as all great Ugandan gatherings do—with a shared meal. Tables overflowed with beloved staples: matooke, kinyebwa, yams, and beef in groundnut paste. The air was thick with the aroma from huge saucepans, laughter from every direction, and the sound of joy. Strangers became companions, stories were shared, and the space felt smaller, warmer, closer, filled with the hospitality that defines who we are.

“This anniversary is our thank-you to every Ugandan who has made our spirit their own,” said Hillary Baguma, Brand Manager, Uganda Waragi. “It’s SO UG SO 60.”

A Legacy Rooted in Heritage

Uganda Waragi’s story is one of heritage and heart. It began with generations of local gin-making, perfected in 1965 by 26 master blenders. Using pure waters from Lake Victoria and a unique blend of botanicals, they created a spirit unlike any other in the world.

“For Uganda Waragi, this milestone is a celebration of resilience, reinvention, and innovation,” says Edgar Kihumuro, Shopper Manager. “For Uganda, it’s a tribute to our shared heritage, creativity, and craftsmanship, a testament to what it means to be proudly Ugandan.”

Today, Uganda Waragi continues to embody national pride and world-class craftsmanship. With over 28 international gold awards, including the prestigious Grand Gold from Monde Selection 2023, it has cemented its status as a premium, internationally competitive gin.

From the classic Original to bold flavors like Coconut, Pineapple, and Lemon & Ginger, Uganda Waragi continues to reinvent itself while staying true to its roots.
