Eco-Tourism Drives Growth in National Parks Revenue
In the 2025 fiscal year, national parks across the country generated more than 2.2 billion baht in revenue, marking an increase of over 8 million baht compared to the previous year. This growth highlights the rising interest in eco-tourism among both local and international visitors. The trend reflects a broader shift towards sustainable travel and a growing awareness of environmental conservation.
Atthapol Charoenchansa, director-general of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, provided detailed insights into the performance of various national parks. According to him, Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park in Krabi was the top earner, generating 648.9 million baht. This park, known for its stunning beaches and marine biodiversity, continues to attract a large number of tourists each year.
Following closely behind were Mu Ko Similan National Park in Phangnga, which earned 197.2 million baht, and Khao Yai National Park in Nakhon Ratchasima, with 138.4 million baht. Doi Inthanon National Park in Chiang Mai also contributed significantly, bringing in 131.2 million baht, while Khao Laem Ya-Mu Ko Samet National Park in Rayong generated 121.5 million baht.
The new tourism season, which began in October, has already shown positive results. Mu Ko Similan experienced a 11.53% increase in earnings, reaching 11 million baht. This upward trend is expected to continue as more travelers seek out destinations that offer unique natural experiences.
Sustainability Initiatives in National Parks
In addition to their economic contributions, national parks are also focusing on sustainability. The Zero Food Waste initiative is being implemented across all parks to reduce waste and promote responsible tourism. This effort aligns with the country’s broader environmental policies, emphasizing the importance of preserving natural resources for future generations.
The initiative encourages visitors to minimize food waste by promoting responsible consumption and supporting local food systems. It also includes measures such as composting and recycling programs, which help reduce the environmental impact of tourism activities.
