Honoring the Past, Building the Future
This past weekend, a special event took place where former cricket players and administrators were recognized for their contributions to the game and their communities. The Kimberley Sporting Legends Trust organized this celebration, which served as more than just an appreciation of past achievements.
Godfrey Erlank, the chairperson of the Trust, spoke about the significance of the event. He emphasized that while it was important to look back and appreciate what had been done, the focus was also on the future. “The event marked the beginning of formally recording Kimberley’s rich cricket history, ensuring the legacy of its legends lives on,” he explained. “This celebration honours our legends and keeps their legacy alive for generations to come.”
Erlank highlighted that the Trust is not only about remembering the past but also about creating opportunities for the next generation. “The committee aims to empower the next generation through youth programmes, mentoring, and support, leaving a lasting legacy by sharing skills, knowledge, and resources,” he said. This dual focus ensures that the community continues to grow and thrive.
The Kimberley Sporting Legends Gala Event was a testament to the region’s cricketing heritage. It celebrated the past while setting the stage for future events. The event showcased the community’s spirit and generosity, setting a high standard for what can be achieved when people come together for a common cause.
Erlank acknowledged the efforts of the committee and the support from sponsors. Their hard work made the event possible, and he expressed gratitude for their contributions. “The Trust’s chairman then outlined and charted the path ahead,” he said. “The Kimberley Sporting Legends Trust has reaffirmed its commitment to honouring the region’s rich cricket heritage while building a future of excellence, opportunity, and character for youth across Kimberley and South Africa.”
He further explained that the Trust’s mission is to preserve the history of cricket in the area. “As guardians of a proud sporting legacy, the Trust remains dedicated to preserving cricket history, celebrating the pioneers who shaped the game, and ensuring their contributions inspire future generations.”
Erlank stressed the importance of continuing the work of those who came before. “Our duty is twofold – to record and honour our cricket history, and to translate that heritage into meaningful development for our youth and our community.” He added, “We stand on the shoulders of giants, and we are committed to building new shoulders for the generations that follow.”
According to the Trust, cricket represents more than just competition. It is a platform for dignity, unity, moral leadership, and opportunity. The Trust’s purpose and vision revolve around five main initiatives:
- To preserve and document the story of cricket in our community
- To honour and celebrate the heroes who built the game
- To build programmes that develop youth in sport, education, and leadership
- To promote dignity, discipline, and strong family structures
- And to leave a legacy of excellence beyond the boundary
Through mentorship, youth programmes, community partnerships, and heritage initiatives, the Trust is committed to creating lasting impact. “Legacy is not memory alone – it is action; we honour the past by building the future,” Erlank said.
