Ogun Residents Urged to Avoid Perils of Illegal Migration

Government Warns Against Illegal Migration

The Ogun State Command of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has issued a warning to residents in the state, urging them to avoid illegal migration. The command described this practice as a growing threat that leads to “tales of sorrow, avoidable anguish and death.” This message was delivered during a nationwide Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Sensitisation Campaign held on Thursday at the NIS Headquarters in Abeokuta.

The Comptroller-General of the NIS, Kemi Nandap, emphasized her deep concern over the increasing number of Nigerians losing their lives in Europe and America due to the dangers associated with migrant smuggling. She highlighted that many citizens seeking better opportunities abroad are often subjected to forced labor, with women facing rape and other forms of sexual abuse.

Represented by Samson Joseph, the CG clarified that the Federal Government is not discouraging citizens from traveling abroad for legitimate reasons such as education or work. However, she stressed that all travel must be conducted through proper and legal channels. “Some people prefer taking illegal routes when traveling because they do not want to spend money or follow due process. This attitude often leads to disastrous consequences,” Nandap stated.

She outlined the correct steps for international travel, advising citizens to “obtain a valid passport from the Nigeria Immigration Service, secure a visa, and be sure of your destination. Most importantly, avoid fake travel agents who can mislead or exploit you.”

Social Media as a Catalyst for Illegal Migration

Echoing the CG’s sentiments, the Ogun State Comptroller of Immigration, CIS Olufunke Odusote, identified social media as a major factor fueling the crisis. Many Nigerians fall victim to fraudulent job offers and travel agents online. Represented by Deputy Comptroller Kayode Adedigba, Odusote revealed that the command has intensified its crackdown on illegal migration and is collaborating with other security agencies, including the Police and the Amotekun Corps, to curb the trend.

“There is no real freedom outside Nigeria. We are not discouraging people from migrating, but we are urging them to travel legally,” Odusote said. “Many Nigerians abroad are subjected to forced labor, prostitution, rape, and even death. Why not remain in Nigeria, where you have freedom and dignity?”

Campaigns Aim to Educate on Risks of Irregular Migration

The sensitisation campaign featured outreach activities across local communities, aiming to educate residents on the extreme risks of irregular migration. These risks include human trafficking, violence, and dangerous journeys. The event underscores the government’s growing concern over illegal migration, which continues to claim the lives of young Nigerians in search of better opportunities abroad.

Key Steps for Safe International Travel

  • Obtain a valid passportfrom the Nigeria Immigration Service.
  • Secure a visafor the destination country.
  • Be sure of your destinationand ensure it is legitimate.
  • Avoid fake travel agentswho may mislead or exploit you.

Addressing the Root Causes

Economic hardship remains a significant driver of illegal migration. Many young Nigerians see migration as the only way to escape poverty and seek better opportunities. However, the risks involved often outweigh the potential benefits. The government and immigration authorities are working to provide alternatives and promote legal pathways for those who wish to travel abroad.

The campaign also aimed to raise awareness about the dangers of falling for false promises. Many individuals are lured by the idea of quick wealth or easy jobs, only to find themselves trapped in exploitative situations. By educating the public, the NIS hopes to reduce the number of people taking dangerous and illegal routes.

Collaboration with Security Agencies

The Ogun State Command has been working closely with other security agencies to combat illegal migration. This includes partnerships with the police and the Amotekun Corps. These collaborations are essential in identifying and stopping illegal migration networks before they can cause harm.

Conclusion

The warnings from the NIS and local immigration officials serve as a reminder that while migration can offer new opportunities, it must be done safely and legally. The government is committed to ensuring that citizens are informed and protected from the dangers of illegal migration. Through continued education and collaboration, there is hope that fewer lives will be lost to this tragic issue.
