Governor Alex Otti’s Initiative to Boost NYSC Allowances in Abia State
Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has made a significant announcement that is set to impact the lives of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the state. The governor has approved a substantial increase in monthly allowances for these corps members, raising the payment from N4,000 to as much as N50,000.
According to a statement released by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Njoku Ukoha, the new allowance structure provides a base of N20,000 for all corps members serving in Abia. This initiative aims to enhance the experience and motivation of young professionals who are contributing to the development of the state.
Breakdown of the New Allowance Structure
- Base Allowance: All corps members will receive a base allowance of N20,000.
- Additional Allowance for Government Deployments: Those deployed to state government establishments will receive an extra N10,000.
- Special Allowance for Medical and Teaching Corps Members: Medical and teaching corps members will earn an additional N30,000 monthly.
This adjustment is seen as a complementary measure to the Federal Government’s new N77,000 monthly NYSC allowance. It aligns with Governor Otti’s broader policy to strengthen youth empowerment and public sector capacity in the state.
A Historic Move for Youth Empowerment
“This marks the first major adjustment after 27 years, reflecting Governor Otti’s commitment to youth empowerment and workforce development in Abia,” the statement said. The government emphasized that this gesture is part of ongoing reforms aimed at making service more rewarding for corps members and encouraging young professionals to contribute meaningfully to the state’s development.
The administration has also taken steps to upgrade the NYSC Orientation Camp in Bende Local Government Area. Improvements include better internal roads, power supply, and facilities, despite the camp being a federal property.
“The governor believes that every institution or infrastructure within Abia, whether federal or state-owned, deserves attention because it is Abians who benefit the most,” Ukoha stated.
Additional Reforms and Investments
Otti’s government has implemented the Consolidated Health Salary Structure for health workers across the state and extended it to local government employees to align with federal standards. This move aims to boost morale and productivity among public sector workers.
About 35 per cent of the state’s budget is reportedly allocated to healthcare and education—sectors the administration describes as “pillars of institutional capacity and human capital development.”
A Message of Commitment and Vision
“Governor Otti’s latest move sends a clear message: Abia State is serious about empowering youth, rewarding excellence, and building a future where service is truly valued,” the statement added.
Other Notable Developments
In addition to these initiatives, there have been several other developments in the state. These include various community engagement activities and public service announcements aimed at promoting positive change and fostering a sense of unity among residents.
The state continues to focus on improving public services and ensuring that all citizens, especially the youth, have opportunities to thrive and contribute to the growth of Abia State.
