A Day of Laughter and Tribute at Raila Odinga’s Opoda Farm
Siaya Governor James Orengo brought a wave of laughter to Raila Odinga’s Opoda Farm during a visit that was meant to honor the late opposition leader. The event, which saw several politicians and community leaders in attendance, became an unforgettable moment when Orengo turned the somber occasion into a lighthearted celebration.

Among those present was Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who had a long-standing political relationship with Raila. The two had previously joined forces in their bids for the presidency. In the 2013 General Election, Raila ran under the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy with Kalonzo as his running mate, but they were defeated by Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto. In 2017, Raila made another attempt under the National Super Alliance, again choosing Kalonzo as his deputy, but the pair lost once more to the same opponents.
During the visit, Kalonzo presented Ida Odinga, Raila’s widow, with 100 cattle. This gesture, accompanied by members of the Wiper Democratic Movement, the Kamba Council of Elders, and religious representatives, symbolized respect, unity, and the deep bond between the Kamba and Luo communities.
A Theatrical Moment That Lightened the Mood
One of the most memorable parts of the visit came when an elder presented Orengo with a walking stick. The moment sparked a dramatic response from the governor, who took it upon himself to act out a scene that left the crowd in stitches.
Kalonzo, who had introduced Orengo as “the king of Ukambani,” said, “My learned brother. He is progressive, fearless. This is the king of Ukambani; he will present you with this staff.”
An elderly man then approached Orengo, reminiscing about his school days and praising his leadership. He handed over the walking stick, prompting Orengo to take off running while shouting, “Jowi.” Kalonzo laughed heartily, and the crowd followed suit, adding to the joyous atmosphere.
Orengo ran around the venue, brandishing the walking stick, while Ida Odinga watched the spectacle with amusement. He eventually returned to the tent where the dignitaries were seated, leaving behind a memory that many would not soon forget.
