Thailand Unveils 5-Day New Year Holiday to Boost Tourism and Economy

Thailand Announces Extended New Year Holiday to Boost Tourism and Economy

Thailand has made a significant decision to extend its New Year holiday, aiming to boost domestic tourism and support the national economy. The country’s cabinet has approved an additional five-day break, with Friday, January 2, 2026, declared as a special public holiday. This move is expected to provide a much-needed stimulus for local businesses and encourage travel within the country.

The extended New Year break will run from Wednesday, December 31, 2025, through to Sunday, January 4, 2026. This includes New Year’s Eve on December 31, New Year’s Day on January 1, the newly declared special holiday on January 2, and the weekend of January 3–4. The Ministry of Tourism and Sports has welcomed this decision, stating that it will help drive domestic travel and support local businesses that are still recovering from global economic challenges.

“This extended break is not just about celebration—it’s a strategic push to revitalise tourism and stimulate spending,” said a government spokesperson. “We expect a surge in hotel bookings, transport usage, and local commerce.”

In addition to being a public holiday, January 2, 2026, will also be recognized as a bank holiday, meaning financial institutions across the country will be closed. However, the private sector may choose to observe the holiday differently. Employers are encouraged to communicate clearly with their staff regarding company-specific policies. Labour officials noted that while the holiday is officially sanctioned, private companies retain discretion over its observance. Employees are advised to check with their HR departments or management teams to confirm their leave entitlements.

Tourism Authority of Thailand to Launch Promotional Campaigns

The Tourism Authority of Thailand is expected to launch promotional campaigns in the coming weeks to capitalize on the extended break. Special travel packages and events are planned across major provinces, aiming to attract both locals and international visitors. These initiatives are designed to create a vibrant atmosphere during the holiday period and promote various tourist attractions throughout the country.
