Ashanti GJA Supports Journalists in Illegal Mining Accident

Journalists Injured in Field Operations Highlight Safety Concerns

A recent incident involving journalists covering illegal mining activities has raised serious concerns about the safety of media professionals working in high-risk environments. The Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has expressed deep concern over the accident, which occurred during a joint operation with the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) and other security officials.

The GJA’s regional chairman, Mr. Kofi Adu Domfe, issued a statement on behalf of the association, expressing full solidarity with the affected journalists. “The Association stood in full solidarity with our affected colleagues in this difficult moment,” the statement read. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them, their families, and their media organisations.”

The accident took place in the Atwima Mponua district, where a vehicle carrying journalists, EPA officials, and security personnel was involved in a fatal crash near Nyinahin. The journalists sustained various injuries, with some in critical condition being rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) for treatment. Others remain hospitalized at a health facility in Afari, located in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality.

Commitment to Journalist Safety

The GJA emphasized that the safety, welfare, and protection of journalists should always be a top priority. The association highlighted the inherent risks associated with the work of its members, particularly when covering issues like galamsey, or illegal mining, which often involves dangerous field operations.

“The safety, welfare, and protection of journalists remained paramount to the GJA, and this unfortunate incident underscored the inherent risks associated with the critical work its members undertake in pursuit of public interest, especially on issues related to galamsey,” the statement said.

The regional leadership of the GJA pledged unwavering support to the affected journalists. It also stated that it was actively engaging with relevant authorities and partners to ensure they received the necessary medical attention and emotional support. This includes coordinating with healthcare providers and media organizations to provide comprehensive care.

Call for Improved Safety Protocols

The GJA called on all institutions that engage the media in field operations—especially in high-risk areas—to strictly adhere to safety protocols. It urged these entities to ensure proper coordination and preparedness at all times.

“We call on all institutions that engage the media in field operations, particularly in high-risk areas, to adhere strictly to safety protocols and ensure proper coordination and preparedness at all times,” the statement emphasized.

The association reaffirmed its commitment to supporting colleagues through these challenging times. It stressed the importance of maintaining a safe working environment for journalists, who play a crucial role in holding power to account and bringing national attention to environmental and social challenges.

Ongoing Support and Advocacy

The GJA remains resolute in its efforts to advocate for the rights and well-being of its members. It continues to push for better safety measures and greater awareness of the dangers faced by journalists in the field. The association is also working closely with local and national authorities to ensure that such incidents are prevented in the future.

As the injured journalists receive treatment, the GJA has vowed to remain a strong voice for media professionals across the region. Its message is clear: the safety of journalists must never be compromised, and every effort must be made to protect those who risk their lives to report the truth.
