The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has declared that the Democracy Cup, a football initiative promoted by his office to support the country’s democratic growth, will continue to be a lasting project.
Speaking at a reception for partners and sponsors of the 2nd edition of the Democracy Cup at Parliament House, Speaker Bagbin commended the initiative’s achievements and revealed that it has drawn international attention.
According to him, several countries, including South Africa, Germany, and the United Kingdom, have shown interest in hosting future editions of the football competition. Through the efforts of the Speaker’s office and Vanivo Media Limited, a partnership with an English football club, Sunderland, has been secured.
“The Democracy Cup is here to stay. We celebrate the success of this year’s edition. I want to stress that the Democracy Cup is not just about a football match; it is a comprehensive national programme,” he stated.
As part of ongoing efforts to maintain the initiative, the Speaker announced plans to create the Democracy School of Excellence, an educational institution focused on developing civic values, discipline, and leadership among the youth. He highlighted the unifying power of football, which goes beyond political and social boundaries, fostering peace and democratic values across the continent.
Speaker Bagbin thanked key sponsors, such as the KGL Ghana Group, for their contributions and urged more corporate entities to collaborate with Parliament in advancing the goals of the Democracy Cup initiative.
