Intensive Drunk Driving Crackdowns in Seoul
In response to a series of incidents, including a tragic accident involving a Japanese tourist due to drunk driving, the police in Seoul have initiated intensive crackdowns on drunk driving. These efforts have led to the detection of 11 cases of drunk driving, highlighting the ongoing challenge of ensuring road safety.
On the 8th, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced that they conducted an intensive crackdown on major roads in Seoul for approximately two hours the previous night. During this operation, they identified a total of 11 cases of drunk driving, which included two license cancellations and nine license suspensions. The crackdown involved a significant mobilization of resources, with 116 traffic police officers and mobile patrol officers, along with 35 patrol cars and motorcycles, participating in the operation.
The focus of these crackdowns was on areas known for a high incidence of drunk driving accidents. These locations included the areas around Gangnam Station, Gyeongdai Station, Yangjae Station, and near Heunginjimun in Jongno-gu. Among these, the highest number of drunk driving cases were detected at Gangnam Sagil Station, where one license cancellation and four license suspensions were recorded.
Notably, the Heunginjimun area has become a focal point for these operations, especially after a tragic incident on the 2nd, when a Japanese tourist mother and daughter were hit by a drunk driver on their first day in Korea. This resulted in the death of the 50-year-old mother. In the aftermath of this incident, two additional drunk drivers were detected in the same area.
One of the individuals caught near the Heunginjimun intersection was a 40-year-old man who faced license cancellation. Although his blood alcohol level corresponded to a license suspension, his prior history of drunk driving led to the more severe penalty. This case underscores the importance of addressing repeat offenses and reinforcing the consequences of drunk driving.
The police have emphasized their commitment to continuing these surprise crackdowns at locations prone to drunk driving accidents. Their goal is to deter potential offenders and enhance road safety for all citizens and visitors. By maintaining a visible presence in high-risk areas, the police aim to create a safer environment and reduce the likelihood of future incidents.
