Governor Alleges Vote Buying and Manipulation in Anambra Election
Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has raised concerns about alleged vote buying and attempts to alter the results of the ongoing governorship election. These claims were made during his visit to a polling unit in Ofiyi Square, Aguata local government area. Despite these allegations, Soludo emphasized that the overall election process has been relatively peaceful and proceeding smoothly.
“From the information I’ve received across the state, the election is going on smoothly and as expected,” Soludo said. “There have been some glitches in certain polling units, particularly with the Biometric Voter Authentication System (BVAS) not functioning properly. However, these issues are isolated and do not seem to affect the overall process.”
Soludo highlighted that while there have been reports of irregularities, the election remains largely uncontested. He pointed out that in some areas, such as Nnewi South local government, there are concerns about widespread vote buying. According to him, a candidate from that region appears desperate to win, offering N15,000 to voters.
“Even if they offer 100,000, it doesn’t matter. Let the people just vote. Count the votes,” Soludo stated. He expressed confidence that he will emerge victorious, citing the principle of one man, one vote.
“We are fairly convinced that based on the votes, we will win by a landslide. No question about that,” he added. Soludo acknowledged the presence of opponents but noted that he has not seen them actively contesting the election. Nevertheless, he emphasized that his party does not take any vote for granted.
“The only party that is visible across all 21 local governments, 326 wards, and throughout the markets, streets, and roads is our party,” Soludo said. “We are present everywhere, ensuring that every vote is counted and respected.”
Despite the challenges, Soludo assured the public that his team is vigilant, organized, and united. He stressed the importance of following the electoral process from the polling unit up to the state level.
“Our people are watching closely. We will follow the process from the polling unit to the coalition at the ward, then to the local government, and finally to the state,” he said. “If the system works as intended, we have absolutely no doubt that we will win all 21 local governments.”
Key Concerns Raised by the Governor
- Vote Buying: Reports indicate that some candidates are attempting to buy votes, particularly in Nnewi South. This includes offering large sums of money to voters.
- Result Manipulation: There are concerns that certain parties may be trying to manipulate the results during the collation process. Some polling agents have reportedly been approached to avoid properly recording or uploading results.
- System Integrity: Despite these challenges, Soludo expressed confidence in the electoral system. He believes that the process will ultimately ensure fair results.
The Role of Vigilance and Organization
Soludo emphasized the importance of vigilance and organization in ensuring a fair election. His campaign has been active across all regions of the state, with representatives present in every local government and ward. This widespread presence is aimed at preventing any form of fraud or manipulation.
“We are not taking any chances. Our people are aware of what is happening, and they are keeping a close watch on the process,” Soludo said. “We believe that transparency and accountability are essential for a legitimate election.”
Conclusion
As the election continues, the focus remains on ensuring that every vote is counted accurately and that the process is conducted fairly. While challenges exist, the governor remains optimistic about the outcome. His campaign’s efforts to monitor the process from start to finish reflect a commitment to democratic principles and the rule of law.
