People Power Party Condemns Prosecution Over Daejang-dong Political Betrayal

Political Tensions Over Daejang-dong Corruption Case

The People Power Party has raised concerns over the prosecution’s decision not to appeal the prison sentences given to private businessmen involved in the Daejang-dong development corruption case. The party claimed that the prosecution had been influenced by external pressures from those in power, leading to the decision to abandon the appeal.

Park Sung-hoon, a senior spokesperson for the People Power Party, highlighted the situation in a commentary. He mentioned that the Daejang-dong investigation and trial team had already prepared for the appeal, including internal approvals and reporting to the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office. However, just before midnight, an order to halt the appeal was issued for unknown reasons by the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office and the Central District Prosecutors’ Office.

Park suggested that this move was an attempt at political intervention and cover-up. He pointed out that pro-Moon leader Justice Minister Jung Sung-ho blocked the prosecution’s appeal in the Daejang-dong trial to protect President Lee Jae-myung.

Since the first-instance ruling against the Daejang-dong conspirators, Park stated that the presidential office, the Democratic Party, and the Lee Jae-myung government have taken desperate measures to shield the president. He warned that if the breach of trust charge, which the government and ruling party are pushing to abolish, is scrapped, the Daejang-dong case could result in a dismissal rather than a conviction. Today’s decision to abandon the appeal is directly connected to that outcome.

Park emphasized that the law must not become a shield for specific individuals, and the rule of law cannot be sacrificed for the convenience of a single president. He reiterated that it is the people’s wish and command that President Lee Jae-myung’s five major criminal trials must immediately resume.

He warned that the People Power Party will take all available measures to uncover the truth behind this matter and solemnly declared that they will join the public in mounting a strong resistance.

Response from the Democratic Party

In contrast, the Democratic Party of Korea responded to the allegations by stating that the prosecution’s “restraint” in refraining from an appeal should not be exaggerated. Democratic Party spokesperson Jang Yoon-mi argued that the prosecution’s decision not to appeal was based on legal judgment and aligned with its policy to avoid indiscriminate appeals.

Jang added that it is difficult to evaluate the decision as “favoritism toward the Daejang-dong conspirators” or an unusual move, given that the necessity for an appeal was deemed low for the conspirators who already received prison sentences of four to six years.

She also criticized the People Power Party’s response, stating that their claim that “the prosecution knelt before power” has gone too far.
