Telecel Foundation Cares for Female Inmates at Akuse Prisons

Telecel Ghana Foundation Supports Female Inmates During CARE Month

As part of this year’s Telecel CARE Month celebrations, the Telecel Ghana Foundation has made a significant impact by dedicating a day to support female inmates at the Akuse Local Prison, specifically the women’s wing located in the Eastern Region. This initiative highlights the foundation’s commitment to social responsibility and community development.

Through the generous contributions of Telecel Ghana employees, the foundation was able to donate essential supplies such as sanitary pads, soaps, toiletries, and disinfectants to the female inmates. These items are crucial for maintaining personal hygiene and overall well-being, especially in an environment where access to such resources may be limited.

The initiative also included a free breast cancer screening exercise for all female inmates and some prison officers. This event was conducted in partnership with medical professionals from the Ridge Medical Centre, ensuring that the services provided were both professional and reliable. Alongside the screenings, the medical team offered basic breast care education and wellness advice, aiming to raise awareness about the importance of early detection and prevention of breast cancer.

Mercy Dawn Akude, the General Manager of Commercial Operations at Telecel Ghana, along with members of the company’s frontline team and the foundation, personally delivered the donations to the inmates. She emphasized the significance of the initiative, stating, “As part of our CARE Month celebrations, we are reaching out to the female inmates, who are often overlooked. We are donating these essential items and providing free breast cancer screening as their health matters.”

ADP Beatrice Asiedu, the Officer-in-charge of the Akuse Female Prison, expressed her gratitude to the Telecel Ghana Foundation and the Ridge Medical Centre for their generosity and support. She highlighted the positive impact of the initiative on the inmates and officers, saying, “This kind and thoughtful gesture means a lot to the inmates and officers. It makes us feel remembered, valued, and genuinely cared for.”

The History and Role of Akuse Female Prison

Established in the 1990s as a small extension of the Akuse Local Prison, the Akuse Female Prison was created to house women in custody separately after logistical challenges made transfers difficult. Originally built to accommodate just five inmates, the facility now houses over twenty individuals and offers a range of rehabilitation programs, including baking and sewing, to help inmates reform and reintegrate into society.

These programs not only provide practical skills but also offer a sense of purpose and hope for the future. By focusing on rehabilitation, the prison aims to reduce recidivism and support the successful reintegration of inmates into their communities.

Expanding the Impact of CARE Month

Beyond this outreach, Telecel Ghana has been celebrating its customers and frontline team throughout October with a variety of rewards, appreciation events, and community engagements. The company has also focused on digital education initiatives to further enhance the experience for its customers and employees.

The annual celebration, which extends the global Customer Service Week into a full month of activities, is under the worldwide theme “Mission: Possible.” This theme reflects Telecel Ghana’s commitment to achieving what many might consider impossible through dedication, innovation, and community involvement.

Conclusion

Telecel Ghana Foundation’s efforts during CARE Month demonstrate a deep commitment to social welfare and community development. By supporting female inmates with essential supplies and healthcare services, the foundation is making a meaningful difference in the lives of those who are often overlooked. The collaboration with medical professionals and the focus on rehabilitation programs highlight the comprehensive approach taken to ensure that every individual has the opportunity to lead a better life.
