Surprise Inspection and Joint Efforts to Combat Dengue
On Saturday, the Administrator of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), Md Mahmudul Hasan, conducted a surprise field visit to inspect ongoing larviciding and cleanliness drives in the Green Road Staff Quarters and Dhanmondi areas. The purpose of the visit was to assess the progress of initiatives aimed at controlling dengue, a disease that has been a growing concern in urban areas.
During the inspection, the Administrator provided necessary directives to the officials involved in the operations. He emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards of cleanliness and effective mosquito control measures to prevent the spread of dengue. His visit highlighted the urgency of the situation and the need for immediate action to safeguard public health.
The Administrator pointed out that the government staff quarters fall under the jurisdiction of the Public Works Department (PWD). Therefore, he stressed that effective dengue control requires coordinated efforts between the PWD authorities and the residents’ committees. This collaboration is essential to ensure that all areas are thoroughly inspected and treated to eliminate breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
He assured the public that the DSCC would provide full support in sustaining mosquito control efforts. “Effective dengue control demands collective effort from all stakeholders,” he stated. “Dhaka South City Corporation will continue to monitor and strengthen mosquito control activities to protect the community.”
The Administrator’s visit was not a solitary effort. He was accompanied by several key officials, including the DSCC Chief Executive Officer, Md Zohirul Islam, the Acting Chief Health Officer, Dr Nishat Parveen, and the Regional Executive Officer (Region-1), Kazi Saleh Mustanjir, among others. Their presence underscored the importance of the initiative and the commitment of various departments to address the issue collectively.
Key Steps in Mosquito Control
To achieve long-term success in combating dengue, the following steps have been identified as critical:
- Regular Inspections: Continuous monitoring of high-risk areas to identify and eliminate mosquito breeding sites.
- Community Involvement: Encouraging residents to participate in cleanliness drives and report potential breeding spots.
- Larviciding and Fogging: Implementing targeted larviciding and fogging operations to reduce mosquito populations effectively.
- Public Awareness Campaigns: Educating the public about dengue prevention and the importance of maintaining hygiene in their surroundings.
Role of Different Stakeholders
The fight against dengue involves multiple stakeholders, each playing a crucial role in the process:
- Government Departments: Such as the PWD and DSCC, responsible for infrastructure maintenance and public health initiatives.
- Health Authorities: Including the Chief Health Officer and medical teams, who oversee health-related protocols and provide guidance.
- Residents’ Committees: Vital in ensuring that local areas remain clean and free from mosquito breeding grounds.
- Local Officials: Who coordinate efforts on the ground and ensure that directives are implemented efficiently.
This collaborative approach is essential to create a sustainable environment that minimizes the risk of dengue outbreaks. By working together, all parties can contribute to a healthier and safer community.
Future Plans and Commitment
Looking ahead, the DSCC plans to intensify its mosquito control efforts. This includes increasing the frequency of inspections, expanding larviciding operations, and enhancing public awareness campaigns. The goal is to create a comprehensive strategy that addresses both immediate and long-term challenges in dengue prevention.
The Administrator reiterated his commitment to ensuring that these efforts are sustained over time. “We will not waver in our mission to protect the public from dengue,” he said. “Our focus remains on continuous improvement and proactive measures to safeguard the health of our citizens.”
