Child Protection Workshop Highlights Urgent Need for Increased Funding and Collaboration
Participants at a recent child protection workshop in Ho have emphasized the need for the government and various assemblies to allocate more resources to children’s programs and activities across the country. They expressed concern over the lack of funding, which has hindered numerous child protection and development initiatives at the district, regional, and national levels.
The one-day intensive capacity-building workshop was organized by SOS Children’s Villages, an NGO, in collaboration with Friends of Adaklu, another NGO operating in the Adaklu district. The event focused on the theme: “Enhancing Institutional Capacity of Community Structures For Effective Child Protection at All Levels.” It was held under the auspices of the Department of Children and the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC).
Key Objectives of the Workshop
The workshop brought together members of the Adaklu district and Volta Regional Child Protection Committees (CPC). Its primary goal was to build the capacity of these committees to coordinate, monitor, and respond to child protection issues effectively and efficiently within their regions. Additionally, the event aimed to strengthen collaboration among stakeholders in advocating for the protection and well-being of all children, especially those without parental care.
Participants stressed that increasing budgetary allocations for child-related issues would enable children to have the best start in life. They also called for better resourcing and retooling of the Department of Children and the Department of Social Welfare to ensure these departments can fulfill their mandates effectively.
“It is pathetic to hear that officers of these departments sometimes rely on their personal resources for official works,” participants noted.
Importance of Protecting Children
Alhaji Avona Mohammed Akape, the Chief Director of the VRCC, highlighted the significance of children as the most important asset of any country. He urged for their protection from harm and the promotion of their overall well-being during his opening remarks.
Mr. Anthony Owusu Gyamfi, National Programmes Director of SOS Children’s Villages, emphasized the importance of equipping CPC members with the necessary resources, knowledge, and skills. He stated that this would empower them to protect children from harm, promote their interests, and support their development.
Participant Experiences and Insights
Madam Agartha Agbogah, a participant, shared her experience with the Ghana News Agency, stating that she gained valuable insights into child protection issues. She mentioned that the workshop had prepared her well for her responsibilities in caring for children.
Call to Action for Stakeholders
The workshop underscored the critical role of community structures in ensuring effective child protection. It highlighted the need for sustained investment in child welfare programs and the importance of fostering partnerships between government agencies, NGOs, and local communities.
By addressing the challenges faced by child protection committees and advocating for increased funding, the workshop aimed to create a more supportive environment for children in the region. The discussions and recommendations from the event are expected to influence future policies and practices in child protection efforts across the country.
