Sunny Patel Returns to Cricket in Nepal
Sunny Patel is making a triumphant return to the cricket field in Nepal, bringing with him a wealth of experience and a track record of success. Patel has been an active participant in several premier cricket leagues in the country, including the Everest Premier League (EPL), Dhangadhi Premier League (DPL), and Pokhara Premier League (PPL). His contributions have not only earned him recognition but also helped his teams secure victories in all three tournaments.
In 2018, Patel played a pivotal role in leading the Lalitpur Patriots to victory in the EPL. The following year, he was instrumental in the CYC Attariya team’s win in the DPL, and again in 2019, he helped the Chitwan Rhinos claim the PPL title. His consistent performance and leadership on the field have made him a valuable asset to any team he joins.
Patel’s recent success extended beyond Nepal when he was part of the MI New York team that won the Major League Cricket in the United States this July. This achievement further solidified his reputation as a reliable and versatile player.
The announcement of Patel joining the Kathmandu Gorkhas for the second season of the Nepal Premier League has generated immense excitement among fans. His presence is expected to elevate the team’s performance and bring a new level of energy to the league.
Monty Desai, the head coach of the Kathmandu Gorkhas, expressed his enthusiasm about Patel’s inclusion. Desai, who recently arrived in Kathmandu to take charge of the team, shared his admiration for Patel’s skills and professionalism. “Sunny has been an integral part of the Atlanta Fire setup, and I’ve seen first-hand the energy, consistency, and match awareness he brings to every contest,” Desai said.
He added, “Sunny’s ability to contribute with both bat and ball—alongside his experience with MI New York in Major League Cricket—makes him a genuine asset. We’re excited to have him join the Kathmandu Gorkhas family, where his versatility and professionalism will strengthen the balance of our side.”
Tinu Yohannan Joins Lumbini Lions’ Coaching Staff
In another significant development, Tinu Yohannan has taken on the role of chief coach for the Lumbini Lions. Yohannan, a former Indian cricketer, had a brief stint with the senior national team, making his debut in Test and ODI formats in 2001 and 2002 respectively. Despite his limited appearances—only three matches each in both formats—he became the first player from Kerala to represent India in the major formats.
Throughout his playing career, Yohannan participated in 59 First Class and 45 List A matches. As a right-arm medium pacer, he showcased his skills on various platforms before transitioning into coaching.
Yohannan served as the chief coach of the Kerala Cricket Association from 2020. Prior to that, he held roles as the bowling coach for Kerala and interim head coach. He also took charge of the Andhra Pradesh team during the 2024-25 season.
Now, Yohannan will lead the Lumbini Lions’ coaching staff, which includes notable figures such as Indian cricketer Rupesh Singh and Nepali legends Shakti Gauchan and Subash Khakurel. His appointment is expected to bring a blend of international and local expertise to the team, enhancing their prospects in the upcoming season.
