6,000 Acres of Punjab’s Forests Lost in Wildfire Surge

Escalating Wildfire Crisis in Punjab and Across Pakistan

Wildfires have become a growing concern across Punjab, with devastating consequences for the region’s forests. Over the past three years, more than 6,000 acres of forest land have been lost to recurring fires. These incidents have not only damaged the environment but also raised serious concerns about the long-term sustainability of natural resources in the area.

According to official data accessed by Dunya News, Punjab recorded 268 forest fire incidents over this period, making up nearly 40 percent of the 479 cases reported nationwide. The impact of these fires is felt beyond Punjab, as almost 15,500 acres of forest land have been affected by wildfires since 2023 across Pakistan.

The year 2024 proved to be the most destructive, with Punjab witnessing 165 fire incidents that devastated 3,363 acres of forest. This marked a sharp increase compared to 2023, when only four fires were reported, burning just 25 acres. The situation remains critical in 2025, as 97 more incidents have already destroyed 2,729 acres of woodland.

Other provinces have also faced significant losses due to wildfires. In Balochistan, two fires in 2024 scorched 590 acres, while 14 incidents this year have wiped out another 4,629 acres. Sindh reported five fires, damaging 63 acres, whereas Khyber Pakhtunkhwa suffered 60 fires in 2024 that consumed 1,235 acres—though no incidents have been recorded this year. Islamabad saw 48 fires in total, affecting around 336 acres of forest area.

Factors Contributing to the Wildfire Crisis

Experts point to several factors contributing to the growing wildfire crisis. Climate change has led to longer dry spells and higher temperatures, creating conditions that are more conducive to fires. Illegal logging has further weakened the forest ecosystem, making it more vulnerable to damage. Additionally, human negligence, such as improper disposal of fire sources or reckless behavior in forested areas, plays a major role in igniting these disasters.

The Forest Department has called for immediate action to address the issue. Key measures include public awareness campaigns to educate communities on fire prevention, the implementation of advanced monitoring systems to detect fires early, and the revival of fire lines—natural or artificial barriers designed to contain fires and prevent their spread.

Ongoing Challenges and the Need for Action

Despite these efforts, the challenge remains significant. The increasing frequency and intensity of wildfires highlight the need for sustained investment in forest management and climate resilience strategies. Local authorities, environmental organizations, and the public must work together to implement long-term solutions that protect both natural resources and the communities that depend on them.

The situation underscores the importance of proactive measures to mitigate the impact of wildfires. Without decisive action, the loss of forest land could have far-reaching consequences, including biodiversity loss, soil degradation, and increased carbon emissions.

As the threat of wildfires continues to grow, it is imperative that all stakeholders remain vigilant and committed to safeguarding the environment for future generations.
