Pakistan and Netherlands boost sustainable textile partnership

Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation in Sustainable Textiles

Rana Ihsaan Afzal Khan, Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Commerce, recently met with a high-level delegation from Beddinghouse and Invest International based in The Netherlands. The primary focus of the meeting was to explore ways to enhance bilateral cooperation in sustainable textiles, circular economy initiatives, and investment partnerships.

The Dutch delegation was led by Ms. Henriëtte van Beynum, CEO of Beddinghouse, along with Mr. Boudewijn Mol, Director, and Ms. Sandra Bruinse, Impact and ESG Advisor at Invest International. During the discussions, Mr. Khan expressed appreciation for the Netherlands’ role as Pakistan’s second-largest export market within the European Union and fifth globally. He highlighted the steady growth in bilateral trade and praised Beddinghouse for its long-standing sourcing relationship with Pakistan’s textile sector, which currently exceeds £30 million annually.

Mr. Khan commended Beddinghouse for its commitment to sustainability, ethical sourcing, and circular textile practices. He specifically noted the company’s decision to establish a permanent sourcing office in Pakistan, which he described as a vote of confidence in the country’s textile sector and its skilled workforce. He assured full facilitation from the Ministry of Commerce and relevant institutions to support this initiative.

Aligning with EU Standards

During the meeting, Mr. Khan emphasized that Pakistan’s robust certification, compliance, and labor rights frameworks align with EU market requirements. These standards reflect Pakistan’s national priority for responsible and sustainable production. This alignment is crucial for strengthening trade relations and ensuring that Pakistani products meet international benchmarks.

Discussions also centered around sustainability and circularity in textile production. Beddinghouse shared plans to launch a pilot project on textile waste reuse in collaboration with a local enterprise. The project aims to promote technology transfer, strengthen supplier partnerships, and enhance traceability across the value chain through Beddinghouse’s local presence.

Mr. Khan highlighted that Pakistan and the Netherlands share a common vision for environmentally responsible growth and innovation. He invited Invest International to explore co-financing models and partnerships in recycling, renewable energy for industrial use, and capacity-building initiatives within Pakistan’s textile sector.

Commitment to a Sustainable Future

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to building a sustainable and circular textile ecosystem. This includes enhancing bilateral trade, investment, job creation, technology transfer, and environmental stewardship. The meeting concluded with mutual appreciation and optimism for further strengthening Pakistan-Netherlands economic relations.
