Introduction to the Nyota Programme

The Nyota Programme has taken a significant step forward as thousands of young people across the country began receiving their first tranche of start-up funds. This government-led initiative, aimed at empowering youth, marks a pivotal moment in the economic transformation of the region.

Launch and Initial Disbursement

Excitement was palpable among the beneficiaries as they confirmed receipt of the funds through text messages from programme administrators. The official launch of the programme was presided over by President William Ruto, who highlighted the importance of this initiative in fostering economic growth and opportunity.

A total of 12,155 beneficiaries from Busia, Vihiga, Kakamega, and Bungoma counties, collectively known as the Western cluster, each received Sh25,000. This marked a major milestone in the programme’s rollout, with a total of Sh267 million scheduled for disbursement during the launch event.

Financial Details and Communication

President Ruto revealed that over Sh160 million had already been sent to beneficiaries’ mobile wallets. The communication sent to the recipients was clear and direct: “Dear beneficiary, you have successfully unlocked your start-up capital. Sh22,000 has been sent to your Pochila Biashara wallet. Sh3,000 will be sent to your Zidi account.”

Overview of the Nyota Programme

The Nyota Programme is a five-year flagship initiative funded by the World Bank, designed to empower youth with capital to start and grow small businesses. It is spearheaded by the Ministry of Cooperatives and MSMEs and is part of the government’s broader effort to empower the youth under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

Target Audience and Support

The programme targets young entrepreneurs, persons with disabilities, and job seekers, providing them with start-up capital, mentorship, and business development training. Before the disbursement, beneficiaries underwent a rigorous selection and training process designed to equip them with the knowledge and discipline to run sustainable businesses.

Future Phases and Mentorship

MSMEs Principal Secretary Susan Mang’eni outlined the next phase, which will involve a four-month mentorship programme linking the youth to local enterprises and economic opportunities. This will be done in partnership with key government agencies and financial institutions.

Impact on Entrepreneurs

The disbursement brought hope and relief to many first-time entrepreneurs in the region. Several beneficiaries expressed optimism that the funds would help them expand their ventures in agribusiness, retail, and digital services. For many, the event symbolized a tangible step toward economic independence and a chance to turn ideas into income-generating activities.

Government Encouragement and Responsibility

Government officials praised the youth for their enthusiasm and urged them to use the funds responsibly. They emphasized the importance of accountability, innovation, and community impact. The launch marked one of the largest coordinated youth funding exercises under the Nyota initiative, signaling the administration’s resolve to empower young Kenyans and strengthen grassroots entrepreneurship.

Key Attendees at the Launch

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Cooperatives Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya, Governor Fernandes Barasa, and representatives from the World Bank were present during the launch. Their presence underscored the significance of the event and the commitment of various stakeholders to the success of the Nyota Programme.
