Bangladesh Christian Association Condemns Attack on St. Mary’s Cathedral Church
Dhaka, Nov. 8 – The Bangladesh Christian Association (BCA) has strongly condemned a recent attack on the historic St. Mary’s Cathedral Church in Ramna, labeling the incident as “deeply alarming and reprehensible.” This act of violence has raised significant concerns about the safety and security of religious institutions in the country.
In a joint statement issued on Saturday, BCA President Nirmol Rozario and General Secretary Hemanto I. Corraya expressed grave concern over the attack, describing it as “a direct assault on the spirit of religious harmony.” The leaders emphasized that such acts of violence not only threaten the physical safety of the community but also undermine the principles of coexistence and tolerance that are essential for societal peace.
According to sources, the attack occurred around 10:45 pm on Friday. A crude bomb exploded in front of the church, while another explosive was thrown inside. Fortunately, the second device did not detonate and was later recovered from inside the church by police. This incident has left the local community in shock and fear, with many questioning the motives behind such an attack.
The BCA statement recalled a similar attack that took place last month, on October 8, targeting the Holy Rosary Church in Tejgaon. The association highlighted that two consecutive incidents of violence against major churches within a short time have created fear and anxiety among the Christian community. These events have sparked widespread concern about the growing threat to religious institutions and the safety of their members.
“The attack on Ramna Cathedral cannot be taken lightly. It is an assault on religious coexistence and peace,” the BCA leaders said. They emphasized that such acts of violence are not just isolated incidents but part of a larger pattern that needs to be addressed urgently.
The BCA has called on law enforcement agencies and relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. They urged officials to identify and arrest the perpetrators swiftly and ensure exemplary punishment for those involved. The association believes that swift and decisive action is necessary to send a clear message that such attacks will not be tolerated.
Additionally, the BCA has called on the government to take effective measures to ensure the security of all churches, missionary institutions, schools, colleges, universities, and members of the Christian community across the country. The association stressed that the safety of religious institutions is a matter of national importance and requires coordinated efforts from all stakeholders.
Key Concerns Raised by the BCA
- Security of Religious Institutions: The BCA is deeply concerned about the vulnerability of churches and other religious sites, which are now seen as potential targets for violent acts.
- Impact on the Christian Community: The attacks have created a climate of fear and uncertainty among the Christian community, affecting their daily lives and sense of security.
- Need for Government Action: The BCA is urging the government to implement stronger security measures and provide support to religious institutions to prevent future attacks.
- Promotion of Religious Harmony: The association is committed to promoting religious harmony and ensuring that all communities feel safe and respected.
The BCA’s call for action reflects the broader concerns of the Christian community in Bangladesh, who are seeking reassurance and protection from such acts of violence. As the situation continues to unfold, the need for a comprehensive response from both the government and law enforcement agencies becomes increasingly urgent.
The BCA remains vigilant and determined to advocate for the rights and safety of the Christian community. Their efforts highlight the importance of unity and cooperation in addressing threats to religious freedom and public safety.
