LAUTECH Closes Campus Following Student’s Fatal Road Accident

University Suspends Activities Following Student Death

The management of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Iseyin campus, has taken a significant step in response to a tragic incident that led to the death of a 200-level student. The university has approved a two-week suspension of academic activities at the Iseyin campus following the fatal accident involving the student.

The incident occurred on a Friday morning when the student was run over by an unidentified commercial driver on the Iseyin/Saki Road in Oyo State. According to reports, the victim was a student from the Department of Agricultural Economics. The circumstances surrounding the accident have raised concerns among the university community and prompted immediate action from the administration.

Protests and Aftermath

Following the incident, other students staged a protest and set the commercial vehicle involved in the accident on fire. This act of anger and frustration came after it was discovered that the driver had fled the scene. The protests highlighted the emotional impact of the tragedy on the student body and underscored the need for accountability and justice.

Official Response from the University

On Saturday, the Registrar of the institution, Olayinka Balogun, confirmed the details of the incident. In a statement, he expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the student and emphasized the university’s commitment to supporting its community during this difficult time.

Balogun stated, “The management of LAUTECH, Ogbomoso, deeply regrets to announce the tragic passing of a 200-level student of the Department of Agricultural Economics, who was fatally wounded by a hit-and-run driver in Iseyin.”

He added, “This heartbreaking incident has cast a shadow over our university community, and we extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased.”

Suspension of Academic Activities

In recognition of the emotional toll on students and staff, the university has decided to suspend academic activities at the Iseyin campus for two weeks. This measure is intended to allow the community to grieve and reflect on the incident.

Balogun explained, “Consequently, all students in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Renewable Natural Resources are to proceed on a two-week break. While students will be expected back in their classrooms on Monday, November 24, 2025, when academic activities resume, officers on essential services who may be required to be on duty will be informed in the usual manner.”

Call for Unity and Safety

The registrar also urged students to remain safe, support one another, and honour the memory of their departed colleague. He emphasized the importance of unity and resilience within the university community during such challenging times.

Previous Incidents and Institutional Responses

This incident is not the first time educational institutions have been affected by tragic events. A similar situation occurred earlier in the year when the Lagos State Government ordered the closure of Smiley Kids Montessori School in Heritage Place Estate, Sangotedo, following a swimming pool accident that claimed the life of a two-year-old girl named Rapheila Ogbodo.

Both cases highlight the pattern of temporary closures of educational institutions in response to student deaths. These actions are typically taken to ensure thorough investigations and to provide necessary administrative support to affected families and communities.

Conclusion

The suspension of activities at the Iseyin campus of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology underscores the profound impact of such tragedies on the educational environment. It reflects the university’s commitment to addressing the emotional and psychological needs of its students and staff while ensuring a safe and supportive learning environment. As the community moves forward, the focus remains on healing, remembrance, and the pursuit of justice for the lost student.
