Road Safety Campaign Launched to Tackle Dangerous Driving Behaviors
The Inspector General of Police, Felix Namuhoranye, has issued a strong warning against reckless driving and the use of alcohol or drugs while operating vehicles. He emphasized that these behaviors are major causes of road accidents, which have been on the rise in recent months. His remarks came during the launch of the ‘Turindane’ road safety campaign in Rubavu District on Friday, November 7. The initiative aims to significantly reduce traffic incidents and improve road safety across the region.
The campaign was introduced in response to a sharp increase in road accidents, as reported by authorities in the Western Province. According to data, the region recorded 36 accidents over the last three months, some of which resulted in fatalities. Namuhoranye explained that the name “Turindane” carries a dual meaning: “protect me” and “I protect you.” This concept is meant to encourage drivers to take responsibility for their actions and ensure the safety of their families and neighbors.
Addressing the issue of driver misconduct, Namuhoranye pointed out that some accidents are caused by drug use and reckless driving. He urged drivers to be more cautious and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent further tragedies.
Governor of Western Province, Jean Bosco Ntibitura, also highlighted the challenges posed by the region’s mountainous terrain. He noted that many roads are difficult to navigate, and drivers often ignore caution signs, violating traffic rules and using mobile phones while driving. “We should be focused and avoid speaking on the phone while driving,” he said.
Celestin Ntirugirimbabazi, a driver with over 15 years of experience, echoed these concerns at Rubavu Tax Park after the launch of the ‘Turindane’ campaign. He emphasized that drug abuse is one of the leading factors contributing to road accidents. “When you’re drunk, you lose control and cannot control the vehicle,” he said. Over-speeding is another significant factor, according to Ntirugirimbabazi.
The ‘Turindane’ campaign is part of a broader effort to raise awareness about road safety and promote responsible driving habits. It includes public education initiatives, increased police presence on key roads, and community engagement activities. The goal is to create a culture of safety where drivers, pedestrians, and other road users can coexist without fear of accidents.
Key Issues Identified in the Campaign
- Reckless Driving: Many accidents are attributed to drivers who fail to follow traffic rules, such as speeding, running red lights, and not maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles.
- Drunk Driving: Alcohol and drug use impair judgment and reaction times, making it extremely dangerous to operate a vehicle.
- Distracted Driving: Using mobile phones while driving is a growing concern, as it takes the driver’s attention away from the road.
- Mountainous Terrain: The challenging geography of the Western Province increases the risk of accidents, especially if drivers are not careful.
Call to Action
Namuhoranye and other officials are urging all road users to take the campaign seriously and adopt safer practices. They emphasize that every individual has a role to play in preventing accidents and ensuring the well-being of others on the road.
The success of the ‘Turindane’ campaign will depend on the cooperation of drivers, local authorities, and the general public. By working together, they can make a meaningful difference in reducing road accidents and saving lives.
