Kano Shi’a Protest Trump’s Threat

Protests Against U.S. President’s Allegations in Kano

On Saturday, members of the Islamic Movement, often referred to as Shi’a, gathered in Kano to voice their dissent against U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to deploy military forces in Nigeria. The protest was a direct response to Trump’s recent allegations regarding religious persecution in the country.

The demonstrators marched through major streets of Kano, carrying placards and banners that clearly rejected Trump’s claims of religious killings. Some protesters symbolically placed a U.S. flag on the ground, while others held photographs of Trump, expressing their disapproval of his statements.

Last Friday, Trump had reclassified Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern,” alleging that Christians were being persecuted. He also instructed the U.S. Department of War to prepare contingency plans for a potential strike if the Federal Government failed to address the alleged persecution of Christians.

In response to these claims, Abdullahi Danladi, from the IMN Resource Department, called the statements inflammatory and false. He stated, “These claims are baseless and designed to create discord between Muslims and Christians in Nigeria. Our country’s problems are not religious; they are caused by corruption, selfish politics, and greed.”

Danladi emphasized the group’s commitment to peace, adding, “We support unity and harmony among all communities. Nigerians must not allow foreign agendas to divide us. Our struggle is for justice and fairness, not to fall prey to lies meant to destabilise our society.”

When contacted, the Kano State Police Public Relations Officer indicated that he would investigate the matter and provide an official comment. However, as of the time of filing this report, Kiyawa had yet to officially brief the correspondent or respond to follow-up messages sent to his phone.

Key Points from the Protest

  • The protest was organized by members of the Islamic Movement, who expressed their opposition to U.S. President Donald Trump’s allegations about religious persecution in Nigeria.
  • Demonstrators carried placards and banners rejecting the claims made by Trump, highlighting their belief that the issues in Nigeria are not religious but rather stem from corruption and political greed.
  • Some protesters symbolically placed a U.S. flag on the ground, showing their disapproval of Trump’s statements and actions.
  • The protest occurred after Trump had redesignated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” and warned of possible military intervention if the government did not act.
  • Abdullahi Danladi, representing the IMN Resource Department, criticized the statements as baseless and harmful, urging unity among Nigerians.

Impact of the Statements

The statements made by Trump have sparked significant concern among local groups and leaders. They argue that such accusations could lead to further division and unrest in the country. The Islamic Movement has consistently emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and harmony among different religious communities.

While the Kano State Police have acknowledged the situation, there has been no official statement from them as of yet. This lack of communication has raised questions about the government’s response to the growing tensions.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the Nigerian government will address the concerns raised by both the Islamic Movement and the international community. The focus is now on ensuring that any actions taken are based on accurate information and aimed at fostering national unity rather than exacerbating existing divisions.
