Arrest of Suspect in Transformer Vandalism Case

A 25-year-old man, Idris Abdulkareem, has been arrested for allegedly vandalizing electrical transformers and stealing their components. The arrest took place on Wednesday when the Oyo State Police Command apprehended him.

Idris was captured by residents of the Papa area in Apete Community, Ibadan, around 6 a.m. while he was in possession of certain items that were later identified as evidence. According to reports, it was the quick response of police officers from the Apete Division that prevented Abdulkareem from being attacked by an angry mob after news of his capture spread.

The police arrived at the scene swiftly and ensured the suspect was taken into custody safely. A video recorded by one of the community members showed the suspect being detained early in the morning. The resident claimed that Abdulkareem was suspected of being part of a group that frequently entered the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company’s office in Apete to steal cables and other components, which they would then sell in the Papa Community.

The resident also mentioned that essential parts of electricity transformer installations had been missing from the community on several occasions. This led to increased vigilance among the locals, who were actively looking for those responsible for the thefts.

During questioning, the suspect denied any involvement in the vandalism. He claimed that he had purchased the cables from an unknown person who contacted him via phone and asked him to come for the transaction. According to Abdulkareem, he met the seller, bought the cables, and was on his way back when he was spotted and caught.

When asked to contact the seller, the suspect stated that he couldn’t do so because his phone had been damaged by the mob. His story was corroborated by the Public Relations Officer of the Oyo Command, CSP Adewale Osifeso, who confirmed the incident and mentioned that an investigation was underway.
