Nigeria and Germany Strengthen Partnership to Combat Irregular Migration
The Nigerian Federal Government has expressed appreciation for Germany’s support in addressing irregular migration through initiatives focused on skills acquisition and vocational training. This collaboration aims to equip young people with employable skills, promote structured labor mobility, and create sustainable employment opportunities.
Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Dingyadi, praised Germany during a meeting in Abuja with Dr Matthias Leder, Chief Executive Officer of the Chambers of Commerce and Industry (IHK) Giessen-Friedberg. The minister highlighted the importance of this partnership in fostering legal labor migration and enhancing vocational education.
“This initiative aligns with our commitment to equip young people with practical, employable skills. It’s a win-win for Nigeria and Germany, reducing irregular migration among job-seeking youths,” said Dingyadi.
He emphasized that Nigeria is committed to strengthening technical and vocational education as a pathway to productive employment, entrepreneurship, and lawful migration channels that benefit both nations.
Key Aspects of the Collaboration
- Dual Vocational Training Model: Germany’s approach, which combines classroom instruction with hands-on experience, is being considered as a model for Nigeria’s workforce development.
- Training Exchanges: The government is looking to deepen collaboration with German chambers of commerce to promote structured migration through training exchanges and professional development programs.
- Youth Empowerment: The program targets Nigerian youths seeking to enhance their skills and contribute to national development.
Dingyadi also commended the selection of 18 young Nigerians for the pilot phase of the dual vocational training program in Germany. He described it as a milestone for legal migration and announced plans to celebrate these trainees in Lagos on November 12.
Program Details and Selection Process
Dr Matthias Leder explained that the initiative is part of Germany’s broader plan to promote legal migration through technical training and bilateral cooperation on workforce development. He noted that 300 Nigerian youths were initially shortlisted for the program, with only 18 selected after a rigorous two-stage competition involving aptitude tests and interviews.
“All participants passed the first level of German language proficiency (A1) and will continue training to B2 level before proceeding to Germany,” Leder stated.
He added that participants would earn while learning under the dual system, combining technical education with on-the-job training to gain both income and valuable career experience.
Benefits of the Program
- Earning While Learning: Participants will have the opportunity to earn income while gaining technical and practical skills.
- Language Proficiency: The program includes German language training, preparing participants for life and work in Germany.
- Career Development: On-the-job training will provide valuable experience, increasing the likelihood of successful employment.
Leder expressed confidence that the partnership would strengthen Nigeria-Germany relations and expand future opportunities for young Nigerians pursuing legal, skills-based migration to Europe.
Future Prospects
The collaboration between Nigeria and Germany represents a significant step toward addressing the challenges of irregular migration. By focusing on vocational training and structured labor mobility, both countries are working to create sustainable pathways for youth empowerment and economic growth.
As the program progresses, it is expected to serve as a model for other nations seeking to address similar issues. The success of the initial 18 trainees could pave the way for larger-scale initiatives, benefiting more young people across Nigeria.
