Ruto and German Chancellor Merz Discuss African Peace and Labour Agreement in Phone Call

Kenya and Germany Strengthen Ties Through Strategic Dialogue

President William Ruto engaged in a significant telephone conversation with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Thursday, focusing on critical issues affecting Africa and the future of bilateral relations between Kenya and Germany. The discussion highlighted efforts to address ongoing conflicts across the continent and explore ways to enhance cooperation, particularly in areas such as labour mobility and skills exchange.

Focus on Regional Peace and Security

According to a statement from State House, the dialogue centered on regional peace and security. Both leaders expressed concern over persistent instability in key regions, including the Horn of Africa, Sudan, and the Great Lakes. They emphasized the importance of African-led solutions, continued diplomatic engagement, and stronger international partnerships to restore stability and promote long-term peace.

“Kenya remains committed to working with Germany and other partners to promote peace, democracy, and sustainable development across Africa,” President Ruto stated during the call. His remarks underscored Kenya’s dedication to fostering collaboration that supports the continent’s growth and security.

Labour Mobility and Skills Exchange

The leaders also reviewed progress on the Kenya-Germany Bilateral Labour Agreement, which aims to expand opportunities for skilled Kenyan workers in various sectors of the German economy. President Ruto noted that this partnership aligns with his administration’s labour mobility strategy, designed to create employment opportunities abroad while strengthening bilateral ties.

Chancellor Merz welcomed Kenya’s efforts to train and certify skilled workers, expressing Germany’s anticipation for “a structured and mutually beneficial framework” that supports both countries’ economic needs. This collaboration is expected to provide valuable opportunities for Kenyan professionals and contribute to Germany’s workforce requirements.

Additional Areas of Cooperation

Beyond labour mobility, the two leaders discussed green energy cooperation, vocational training, and investment opportunities. These discussions reaffirmed their commitment to deepening Kenya-Germany relations and exploring new avenues for mutual benefit.

The phone conversation comes ahead of the planned opening of the Qatari Visa Centre in Nairobi in 2026, part of Kenya’s broader push to expand labour and economic partnerships with international allies. This initiative reflects Kenya’s strategic approach to building relationships that support its economic development goals.

Looking Ahead

As Kenya continues to strengthen its global connections, the dialogue with Germany highlights the importance of multilateral cooperation in addressing shared challenges. The focus on peace, economic development, and skill-sharing sets a positive tone for future collaborations between the two nations.

With ongoing efforts to enhance regional stability and economic partnerships, Kenya and Germany are poised to build a resilient and prosperous relationship that benefits both countries and the broader African continent.
