Actress Debra Messing Sparks Outrage with ‘Jihadist’ Accusation Against Zohran Mamdani

Debra Messing Faces Backlash Over Controversial Posts About New York City’s New Mayor

Debra Messing, the American actress renowned for her role as Grace Adler on the sitcomWill & Grace, has found herself in the center of a heated controversy after sharing a series of posts that many have labeled as offensive and Islamophobic. These comments targeted Zohran Mamdani, the newly elected mayor of New York City.

Mamdani, a 34-year-old Democratic Socialist, made history by winning the mayoral election with 50.4% of the vote. His victory is particularly notable as he is the first Muslim mayor of New York City and the youngest to hold the position in over a century. Born in Uganda and raised in the United States, Mamdani became a U.S. citizen after completing his college education.

Despite these achievements, Messing has been criticized for her social media activity, which includes sharing memes and videos that have drawn sharp criticism. Some of these posts referred to Mamdani as “Osama bin Mamdani” and encouraged New Yorkers to “vote no to terrorism.” These comments were seen as deeply insensitive and xenophobic.

Messing, who is Jewish and known for her strong support of Israel, has also shared content that criticizes Mamdani’s stance on Palestine. She has even publicly identified some of his volunteers, further fueling the backlash against her.

In addition to this, Messing reshared a post from Donald Trump’s Truth Social account, which labeled Mamdani as a “JEW HATER.” While Trump has often faced criticism for his rhetoric, this particular post added to the controversy surrounding Messing’s actions.

Mamdani has consistently maintained that he does not tolerate antisemitism. In a June interview, he stated: “I support Israel’s right to exist as a state with equal rights. I’m not comfortable supporting any state that has a hierarchy of citizenship on the basis of religion or anything else.”

Messing also shared a meme that described Mamdani as an “Actual Communist, Jihadist… A literal Karl Marx-quoting, America-hating jihadist.” This claim was widely criticized as both inaccurate and inflammatory.

On social media, many users have condemned Messing’s posts as “deeply Islamophobic.” One X user remarked, “Debra has posted 91 Instagram stories in the past 24 hours. Not an exaggeration. I think Zohran has actually broken her brain.”

The controversy has sparked widespread discussion about the responsibility of public figures when it comes to their online presence. Many argue that celebrities have a platform that can influence public opinion, and with that power comes the need for careful and respectful communication.

As Zohran Mamdani prepares to take office as the mayor of New York City on January 1, 2026, the debate over how to address issues of identity, politics, and free speech continues to evolve. The incident involving Debra Messing serves as a reminder of the importance of thoughtful discourse in the digital age.
