A Journey Through Health Challenges
Actor Jung Ae-ri has shared her personal experiences with a significant health challenge, reflecting on her battle with ovarian cancer. Her story offers insight into the struggles and resilience that come with such a diagnosis.
Overcoming the Odds
Jung Ae-ri revealed on the June 6 broadcast of KBS2TV’s “Problem Child in House” that more than five years have passed since her diagnosis. She expressed that she can now say she is cured, noting that it is commonly believed that one “graduates” from cancer after five years. This statement highlights the emotional journey she has undertaken and the hope that comes with recovery.
The Initial Diagnosis
The actress recounted how she discovered her condition while visiting the hospital for peritonitis. She described a moment when she was sitting down to memorize her lines, only to experience severe stomach pain. Even during performances in a musical, she felt chills and a decline in her health. At the time, she thought, “Why is it so cold?” and took painkillers to continue with her schedule.
Her condition worsened, leading her to call 119 and go to the hospital, where she was initially diagnosed with peritonitis. She later realized how foolish she had been in enduring the pain, as her appendix had ruptured, and over 24 hours had passed before she received treatment. After surgery, the attending physician remarked, “I’ve never seen such severe inflammation before.”
A New Diagnosis
Jung Ae-ri explained that when she visited the hospital to check her post-surgery progress, the doctor suggested she might need to switch departments. She was then referred to the cancer ward, where she received an ovarian cancer diagnosis at the gynecology department.
Treatment and Recovery
Jung Ae-ri underwent one year of anticancer treatment. Since then, she has focused on maintaining her health through regular walks and yoga. She mentioned, “I tried to maintain regular habits. I became more cautious.” She added, “I came to think that I shouldn’t push myself too hard in life. Still, I live while striving, but there are moments when I try to be more lenient with myself.”
A Connection with Another Survivor
Jung Ae-ri also shared a sense of kinship with Hong Jin-kyung, who battled the same type of cancer. She said, “When you experience pain, you understand those who are suffering more deeply. I learned that Jin-kyung also suffered from the same cancer and began paying attention. I watched her activities closely.”
In response, Hong Jin-kyung shared her own experience, stating, “I went to remove a uterine tumor, and through a tissue examination, it was detected early. That’s how I survived.”
A Personal Transformation
Jung Ae-ri previously mentioned on another broadcast that she experienced severe hair loss as a side effect of anticancer treatment. After enduring the treatment for a year, her hair grew enough to be styled at a salon, and she had a photo shoot. This moment marked a significant step in her recovery and personal transformation.
Embracing a New Perspective
Through her journey, Jung Ae-ri has gained a new perspective on life. She emphasizes the importance of self-care and balance, highlighting the need to be kinder to oneself while still striving for goals. Her story serves as an inspiration to others facing similar challenges, showcasing the strength and resilience that come from overcoming adversity.
