British Family Who Moved to Italy for a ‘Better Life’ Now Reveal Their Departure

A British Family’s Journey to Italy and Their Decision to Leave

A British family who moved to Italy in search of a better life have now decided to give it up, sharing their reasons for leaving the European country. Annabel Fenwick Elliott, a writer for The Telegraph, left the UK three years ago and lived in Iceland and Mauritus before settling in Italy with her husband and three-year-old son.

They have been living in a small Umbrian village for six months, renting a farmhouse that they initially considered an ‘idyllic’ lifestyle. Despite the beauty and charm of their new home, Annabel has decided that they will be moving to America soon.

One of the main reasons for their decision is the language barrier. Annabel admits that she struggled with learning Italian, even after taking an intensive course. She feels that she is simply not good at foreign languages, which made it difficult to fully integrate into the local community. While she managed to get by with the knowledge she gained, it was not enough to be truly immersed in the culture. She described the experience as ‘difficult’ and ’embarrassing’ when trying to communicate with locals.

In addition to the language challenges, Annabel pointed out the lack of opportunities for young adults leaving school. She also shared her concerns about the Catholic teachings her son experienced at nursery each day.

Challenges of Daily Life in Italy

Annabel found that even basic tasks like booking a doctor’s appointment or posting a letter were incredibly ‘complicated’ in Italy. These challenges added to the stress of adjusting to a new country and culture.

Despite these difficulties, Annabel did enjoy many positive aspects of her time in Italy. She praised the good food, ‘perfect’ weather, and the friendly locals. She also appreciated the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, for bringing ‘optimism and national pride’ to the country.

The cost of living in Italy was another factor in her decision. Annabel mentioned that a decent ‘fixer-upper’ can be purchased for around €80,000, which is significantly cheaper than what she would pay in the UK. Additionally, the local nursery near their home ‘costs nothing’, which was a big relief for the family.

A New Chapter in America

Although Annabel had many positive experiences in Italy, she ultimately felt that European locations and the need to learn another language were not for her. Instead, the family is looking forward to their next venture in America.

Another Perspective: Moving Back to Italy

While Annabel and her family are leaving Italy, others have had more success in relocating. Luca Tagliaferro, who was born in Italy, moved to the UK in 2011 to study at university. He built a career there and settled in Portsmouth with his wife and son. However, after feeling tired of his life in the UK, he made the decision to resign from his job, sell his home, and move back to Italy in 2023. He cited the UK’s cost-of-living crisis as the tipping point for his decision.
