End terrorism, stop killings, group urges government

Nigeria Evangelical Fellowship Calls for Urgent Government Action Against Violence

The Nigeria Evangelical Fellowship (NEF) has issued a strong appeal to the Federal Government, urging it to take decisive measures against terrorist groups, bandits, and violent militias that are threatening peace and unity in the country. This call was made during the 60th Anniversary Summit of the organization, which took place in Abuja from November 3rd to 6th, 2025.

In a communiqué released at the conclusion of the summit, the NEF expressed deep concern over the “painful reality of religious and ethnic-motivated terrorism, violence, and recurring attacks on communities and citizens across various regions of our nation.” The organization emphasized the need for urgent action to address the growing threat of terror and insecurity.

The communiqué stated:

“The Nigeria Evangelical Fellowship has reflected soberly on the painful reality of religious and ethnic-motivated terrorism, violence and recurring attacks on communities and citizens across various regions of our nation, and urges the federal government to take urgent actions to address the growing threat of terror and insecurity in Nigeria.
‘The Fellowship calls on the Federal Government of Nigeria, as a matter of urgency to: prioritise national security and stability by arresting, prosecuting and disarming all terrorist groups, bandits and violent militias operating within Nigerian communities.’”

This statement comes amid increasing domestic and international attention on allegations of a “Christian genocide” in Nigeria. In response, former US President Donald Trump recently redesignated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern,” directing the Department of War to “prepare for possible military action.” He also warned that American aid and assistance to Nigeria would be cut off immediately if the killings continued.

However, Nigerian officials have consistently refuted these claims, asserting that the violence is not limited to one religion but is widespread across different faiths. They argue that the conflict is driven by terrorism, criminal activities, and competition over land and resources rather than religious persecution.

A Call for Collaboration and Protection

The NEF, which represents evangelical churches and mission agencies throughout Nigeria and is affiliated with the Association of Evangelicals in Africa and the World Evangelical Alliance, has also urged the federal government to support collaborative efforts in combating terrorism and other security challenges. The organization emphasized the importance of protecting vulnerable communities and ensuring the safe return of displaced persons to their ancestral homes.

Additionally, the NEF called for greater protection of religious freedom and tolerance. It also urged the government to address the underlying social, economic, and environmental issues that contribute to instability in the nation.

Commitment to Unity and Peace

The communiqué concluded with a reaffirmation of the NEF’s commitment to unity, progress, prosperity, and collaboration. It emphasized the organization’s dedication to speaking with one voice for truth, justice, and peace in Nigeria.
