Urhobo College Claims Victory in 2025 Delta State/Zenith Bank Principals’ Cup

Urhobo College from Uvwie, Warri, has been crowned champions of the 2025 Delta State/Zenith Bank Principals’ Cup after a thrilling final match at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba. The team triumphed over Ogbe-Ijoh Grammar School, Warri South West, with a score of 2-1, marking a memorable moment in their football history.

The game started with an impressive display from Urhobo College, who took the lead just thirty-seven seconds into the match. They extended their advantage in the 30th minute, showcasing their strong performance on the field. However, Ogbe-Ijoh Grammar School managed to pull one goal back midway through the second half, creating tension and excitement for the spectators.

Despite the late pressure from the runners-up, Urhobo College held their ground, demonstrating resilience and determination. Their victory was celebrated not only by their fans but also by the wider community, as they lifted the prestigious trophy.

Governor Praises All Participants

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, was represented at the event by his Deputy, John Onyeme. He commended all participating schools for their outstanding performances, highlighting that every team should be considered a champion. His remarks emphasized the importance of sports in fostering unity and excellence among students.

Onyeme also acknowledged the efforts of Zenith Bank and the organizers, HideaPlus Limited, for their continued investment in grassroots football development. This partnership has played a crucial role in nurturing young talents and promoting football across the state.

Speaker Recognizes Delta’s Football Leadership

Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, expressed his satisfaction with the tournament’s success. He stated that the event reinforces Delta State’s leading position in grassroots football across Nigeria. This recognition highlights the state’s commitment to developing football talent and providing opportunities for young athletes.

Zenith Bank’s Commitment to Youth Development

Dr Adaora Umeoji, Managing Director of Zenith Bank, was represented by Zonal Head, Dr Ifeanyi Atamah, during the event. She emphasized the bank’s pride in supporting youth development through sports. According to her, several past participants have gone on to play professionally, underscoring the long-term benefits of such initiatives.

Organizers Express Satisfaction

The organizers, led by HideaPlus Managing Director, Tony Pemu, expressed their satisfaction with the smooth conduct of the competition. They highlighted the positive atmosphere and the enthusiasm displayed by all participants, which contributed to the overall success of the tournament.

Coach and Team Celebrate Victory

Urhobo College’s coach, Adamu Ali, and team captain expressed their joy over the victory. They pledged to come back stronger next year, showing their commitment to maintaining their winning streak and continuing to represent their school with pride.

Third-Place Match and Prizes

Earlier in the day, Otokutu Grammar School, Ughelli South, lost 1-0 to Justice Peace and Success Academy, Aniocha South, in the Third-Place match. This result determined the final standings of the tournament.

In terms of prizes, Urhobo College received an 18-seater Hummer bus and N2m, while the runners-up, Ogbe-Ijoh Grammar School, were awarded N1.5m. The third and fourth-placed teams received one million and five hundred thousand naira, respectively.

With this victory, Urhobo College has etched their names into Delta football history as champions of the 2025 Principal’s Cup. Their achievement is a testament to their hard work, dedication, and passion for the sport.
