New Leadership at INEC: A Commitment to Electoral Justice
Prof. Joash Amupitan, the newly appointed chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has made a strong statement about his vision for Nigeria’s electoral process. In a recent press conference held in Awka, Amupitan outlined his plans to bring about what he calls ‘electoral justice’ in the country.
Amupitan emphasized that his primary goal is to reduce post-election litigation by ensuring that elections are conducted with transparency and fairness. He believes that if the process is just and clear, it will be more likely to satisfy all stakeholders involved.
“When you feel cheated, or you have been short-changed by INEC or by undue advantage through the security men or whatever it is, and you say okay I must go to court and challenge it. But if within yourself, you know that justice has been served. I’m sure that some people will now begin to accept it. Nobody can force anybody not to go to courts. There’s what is known as access to justice, and the courts must wait for somebody to bring a case to court. So, if nobody brings a case, even if you set up a tribunal and nobody goes to the court, the court cannot force you to bring your case. It may not be immediate, but we are looking at a situation whereby our elections will not be faulted,” Amupitan said.
Key Points from Prof. Amupitan’s Speech
- Focus on Transparency:Amupitan stressed the importance of conducting elections that are transparent and free from any form of manipulation.
- Reducing Litigation:His aim is to minimize the number of legal challenges following elections by ensuring that the process is fair and credible.
- Public Trust:By promoting a sense of justice among voters, he hopes to build trust in the electoral system.
- Judicial Access:He acknowledged the right of individuals to seek justice through the courts but also highlighted the need for a fair process that minimizes the need for legal disputes.
The Role of INEC in Ensuring Fair Elections
As the head of INEC, Amupitan faces the challenge of overseeing a complex and often contentious electoral process. His appointment comes at a time when the Nigerian electorate is increasingly demanding accountability and transparency from electoral authorities.
The commission has faced criticism in the past for issues such as voter registration errors, alleged fraud, and lack of public confidence in the results. Amupitan’s commitment to ‘electoral justice’ could be a turning point in restoring faith in the system.
Challenges Ahead
Despite his optimistic outlook, Amupitan will need to navigate several challenges:
- Ensuring Fairness:The commission must ensure that every step of the electoral process is fair and free from bias.
- Addressing Concerns:Any complaints or allegations of wrongdoing must be addressed promptly and transparently.
- Building Trust:Public confidence in the electoral process is crucial, and Amupitan will need to work closely with all stakeholders to achieve this.
Conclusion
Prof. Joash Amupitan’s vision for INEC is centered around the principles of justice, transparency, and fairness. While the road ahead may be challenging, his commitment to these values offers a hopeful direction for Nigeria’s electoral future. With the right strategies and cooperation from all parties involved, there is potential for meaningful progress in the years to come.
