FIBA Women’s Basketball League Africa Qualifiers Gain Momentum with N$330,000 Sponsorship
The FIBA Women’s Basketball League Africa qualifiers, scheduled to take place in Windhoek from 6 to 10 November, have received a significant boost with a N$330,000 sponsorship from FNB. This financial support is expected to play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth running of the event and providing an opportunity for teams from across the continent to showcase their talent.
The tournament will feature teams from Namibia, Angola, and Malawi, who will compete in what promises to be an exciting and competitive showcase of skill, teamwork, and passion for the game. The matches are set to officially begin on 6 November 2025 at the Deutsche Höhere Privatschule (DHPS), a well-known venue in Windhoek that has previously hosted various sporting events.
At the handover ceremony, Lionel Hamutenya, FNB Namibia Analytics Manager, emphasized the bank’s commitment to nurturing young talent and creating platforms where local athletes can thrive. He stated:
“At FNB Namibia, we are incredibly passionate about supporting Namibian sports and the organisations that create platforms for athletes to grow, compete, and thrive. Our vision has always been clear: to build a globally competitive Namibia and part of that vision means ensuring that every Namibian, regardless of gender or background, can explore opportunities to rise and excel.”
Hamutenya also highlighted the transformative power of sports, noting that this partnership exemplifies how corporate sponsorships can make a lasting impact on communities. He added:
“Beyond competition, this event represents something much greater: the empowerment of the Namibian girl child through sport. When girls are given opportunities to participate, to lead, and to shine, they not only change their own lives, they change their communities and, ultimately, their country.”
A Partnership That Builds Bridges
Nigel Mubita, President of the Namibia Basketball Federation, also addressed the ceremony, reflecting on the long-standing relationship between the federation and FNB Namibia. He expressed gratitude for the bank’s continued support, which has enabled the federation to host and participate in multiple tournaments across different regions of the country.
“This support has culminated in the successful story of this international tournament being hosted here in Windhoek,” said Mubita. “Once again, FNB is enabling Namibian basketball to reach international levels.”
He further thanked FNB Namibia for the opportunity, stating:
“We would like to thank FNB Namibia once again for this moment and for this opportunity as a country.”
Encouraging the Next Generation
In his closing remarks, Hamutenya encouraged the UNAM Phoenix team to give their best on the court and continue inspiring young girls across Namibia. He expressed confidence in their abilities and reminded them that their dreams are valid.
“To our girls, we truly believe in your ability to take this one home! May this sponsorship remind you that your dreams are valid and that FNB Namibia and your country stand behind you every step of the way.”
This event is not just about competition; it is a celebration of perseverance, unity, and the potential of young athletes to shape the future of Namibian sports.
Looking Ahead
As the tournament approaches, the support from FNB Namibia is a clear indicator of the growing investment in women’s sports in the region. With the backing of such key stakeholders, the FIBA Women’s Basketball League Africa qualifiers are set to become a landmark event that promotes inclusivity, excellence, and national pride.
