Water Quality Challenges in Garissa Due to Heavy Rains
The Garissa Water and Sewerage Company (Gawasco) has asked residents to remain patient as ongoing heavy rains continue to impact the quality of water sourced from the River Tana. This situation has led to several challenges for both the company and the local community.
Impact of Heavy Rains on Water Supply
In a public notice, Gawasco explained that the heavy rains have caused a surge in the flow of the Tana River, which has stirred up mud and sediments. These elements have clouded the water at the treatment plant, affecting its clarity and quality. The notice stated:
“The ongoing rains have caused the Tana River to rise, increasing mud and sediments in the water. This has affected the quality and clarity of raw water reaching our plant.”
Despite these challenges, the company assured residents that its technical teams are working around the clock to maintain safety standards and restore normal water quality once river conditions stabilize.
“We appeal to our customers and the general public to bear with us during this short period as we manage the situation. The company is taking all necessary measures to minimize the impact and restore normal water quality as soon as possible,” the statement said.
Intermittent Water Supply Disruptions
Over the past month, Garissa town has experienced intermittent water supply disruptions that have inconvenienced many households and businesses. These disruptions have been a source of frustration for residents who rely on consistent access to clean water.
Omar Abdullahi, Gawasco’s public relations officer, acknowledged the challenges but emphasized that they stem from factors beyond the company’s control. He said:
“On behalf of Gawasco, I want to apologize to our customers in Garissa town and its environs for the inconvenience caused. The problem is a result of the diversion of the River Tana, which has led to heavy silting at the main water intake point.”
Construction Works Complicating the Situation
Abdullahi also pointed out that the ongoing construction works associated with the new Tana River Bridge have worsened the situation. This major infrastructure project aims to improve connectivity across the Northeastern corridor. However, the construction has disrupted water pumping operations, further complicating the water supply issue.
Collaborative Efforts to Resolve the Issue
Chris Kamau, an engineer at Gawasco, mentioned that the company is working closely with the contractor and the Kenya National Highways Authority to find a lasting solution and restore regular water supply. He expressed confidence that once the works are completed and river flow stabilizes, water quality and supply will return to normal.
“We are confident that once the works are completed and river flow stabilises, water quality and supply will return to normal,” he said.
Ongoing Challenges and Community Response
The situation highlights the complex interplay between natural events, infrastructure development, and water supply management. Residents of Garissa have shown understanding and patience, recognizing the difficulties faced by the company. However, the need for a long-term solution remains urgent to prevent future disruptions.
As the rainy season continues, the focus remains on ensuring that the water supply remains safe and reliable for all residents. The collaboration between Gawasco, government authorities, and contractors is critical in addressing these challenges effectively.
