Decathlete Rawino Aims for Podium at Tokyo Deaflympics

Kenya’s Decathlete Dickson Rawino Eyes Podium at Tokyo 2025 Deaflympics

Kenya’s decathlete, Dickson Rawino, is setting his sights on a podium finish at the upcoming Tokyo 2025 Summer Deaflympics, scheduled to take place from November 15 to 26 in Japan. The 35-year-old athlete from Gem in Siaya County has been intensifying his training and remains optimistic about surpassing his performance at the last Games.

“I’m feeling good to represent Kenya again in the Deaflympics. My goal is to finish in position one, two or three,” said Rawino. His determination is fueled by the desire to achieve what he believes is within his reach.

Rawino will be Kenya’s sole representative in the decathlon, which consists of ten events: 100m, 110m hurdles, 1500m, 400m, pole vault, high jump, long jump, shot put, javelin, and discus. He finished sixth at the 2022 Deaflympics in Caxias do Sul, Brazil, an achievement that has only strengthened his resolve to secure a medal this time around.

“When we went to Brazil, I was so close to winning a medal. After my return, I decided that I would continue to work hard,” said the Maseno School for the Deaf alumnus. “I have now trained well, rectified the mistakes, and I am confident of making it to the podium.”

Training and Preparation

Rawino is currently fine-tuning his form at the Moi Stadium, Kasarani, where Team Kenya has set up camp. He earned his qualification after winning the national trials, which featured five decathletes. His success in the trials was a testament to his hard work and dedication.

Training regularly with hearing athletes has significantly enhanced his performance. “Practising with the hearing group has elevated my performance. I have built the endurance and mental toughness needed for victory,” said the father of two.

Despite his progress, Rawino has faced several challenges throughout his career, including a lack of proper training equipment. “Before, it was a big challenge to compete in all the events. For example, you need a proper mattress for the pole vault and hurdles for 110m hurdles. Athletics Kenya had all the equipment, so I really benefited from training and competing with them,” he explained.

Legacy and Support

Rawino follows in the footsteps of his father, Andrew Rawino, a former sprinter who never had the opportunity to represent the country. This legacy motivates him to push further and achieve what his father could not.

Team Kenya coach Samuel Kibet has expressed confidence in Rawino’s abilities. “He is doing very well, and every day he has been improving. We believe he is a man to watch this time,” Kibet said. “It is not simple because of the different events, but we are focused on medals. We want every athlete to come back home with something.”

Key Events in Decathlon

The decathlon includes the following events:

  • 110m hurdles
  • 1500m
  • 400m

Challenges Faced

Throughout his career, Rawino has encountered various obstacles. One of the most significant challenges has been the availability of appropriate training facilities and equipment. However, his perseverance and commitment have allowed him to overcome these hurdles and continue striving for excellence.

Conclusion

As the Tokyo 2025 Summer Deaflympics approach, Dickson Rawino remains focused on his goal of securing a podium finish. With his experience, dedication, and support from his team, he is well-positioned to make a strong showing on the international stage. His journey serves as an inspiration to many, highlighting the power of determination and hard work.
