Kenya’s Star Swimmer Aims for New Personal Best at National Championships
Kenya’s rising swimming star, Don Ndirangu, is preparing to make a strong statement at the Kenya Aquatics National Championships, set to take place from December 4 to 7 at the Bandari Maritime Academy in Mombasa. The event promises to be a significant milestone in Ndirangu’s career as he sets his sights on achieving a new personal best time.
Ndirangu’s recent performance at the 10th Africa Aquatics Zone 3 Swimming Championships, held at the Kasarani Aquatic Arena, has been nothing short of impressive. He demonstrated exceptional skill and determination, securing multiple medals across various events. His achievements include:
- Gold in the 50m Butterflywith a time of 28.14 seconds.
- Gold in the 100m Butterfly.
- Gold in the 100m Freestyle, where he set a meet record with a time of 1:03.36.
These accomplishments have solidified Ndirangu’s position as one of Kenya’s most promising swimmers. He remains focused on surpassing his previous records and proving his dominance on the national stage.
“I don’t let anyone overtake me; I keep the lead,” said Ndirangu. “Last time at Kasarani, I competed alongside Africa’s finest and I defeated them. This is enough evidence that I can compete on the national level and still dominate. I’m sure history will repeat itself. This time round in Mombasa, I’m not only going to compete for medals but also to push beyond my limits and set a new personal best time record.”
Training and Preparation
Ndirangu’s coach, Cian Omondi, is confident in his athlete’s readiness for the upcoming championships. According to Omondi, the swimmer is currently undergoing training at St Nicholas Senior School, where the core structure of his program is based on a long-term athlete development plan.
“We train him to stay longer in the sport, focusing on building every component that makes him swim better each meet but also enjoy it as he advances. He is now fully prepared for victory,” Omondi stated.
The training regimen emphasizes both physical and mental development, ensuring that Ndirangu is well-equipped to handle the challenges of competition. Omondi highlighted the importance of maintaining a balance between academic and athletic pursuits.
“Our main priority is keeping him in the sport. We will target sponsors and scholarships within two to three years. He has a good balance between class time and training. Our programme allows him to attend class on time and even try other extracurricular activities,” he added.
Discipline and Determination
Omondi credited Ndirangu’s progress to his discipline and determination. “He has been disciplined, focused and determined throughout training, and I think it has helped sharpen his career,” he said.
This combination of hard work and commitment has allowed Ndirangu to rise through the ranks and become a key figure in Kenyan swimming. His performances have not only earned him recognition but also inspired younger athletes to pursue their dreams in the sport.
As the Kenya Aquatics National Championships approach, all eyes will be on Ndirangu as he aims to set new benchmarks and continue his journey as one of Kenya’s top swimmers.
