Kisii Rugby Club Unveils Three-Year Plan to Return to Kenya Cup
Kisii Rugby Club has launched an ambitious three-year strategy aimed at making a triumphant return to the Kenya Cup. This plan comes after the club’s recent promotion to the KRU Championship for the 2025/2026 season, following five years in the KRU Nationwide competition. The club is now focused on reaching the play-offs and rebuilding its presence in the top tier of Kenyan rugby.
Kisii experienced a significant setback when they were relegated from the Kenya Cup during the 2017/18 season. However, they made a strong comeback by defeating NYS Spades 25-24 in the Nationwide final, securing their place back in the second tier.
The team will kick off their new season with a match against South Coast Pirates at Seacrest Grounds in Diani, Kwale County, on November 22. Chairman Bob Onchong’a expressed confidence in the team’s readiness for this challenge.
“The boys have stepped up their pre-season training. Their commitment, passion, and discipline over the past few months have been remarkable. We are eager to showcase our growth on the pitch,” he said.
Training sessions for the team have been taking place at Nyabururu Community Grounds, located on the outskirts of Kisii town, from Monday to Friday. Onchong’a highlighted the importance of Fridays, which are dedicated to bonding and prayers, a tradition that continues to strengthen the team’s unity and discipline.
Onchong’a mentioned that the technical bench will be announced once contract negotiations are finalized. He emphasized that the team is in capable hands and that the structures being put in place are designed for long-term success.
Securing Long-Term Stability Through Sponsorships
The club is currently in advanced discussions with several corporate partners to secure sponsorship deals lasting between three and five years. Onchong’a explained that these partnerships are crucial for ensuring the club’s long-term stability and sustainability.
“The goal is to secure the club’s long-term stability and sustainability. The partnerships will enhance player welfare and logistics and ensure the club remains a competitive and well-structured organization for years to come,” he said.
However, the club faces a potential challenge with the possible departure of two key players, Walter Aiko and Lenny Abiero, who are interested in returning to their parent club, Kisumu RFC. Despite this, Kisii has already signed four new players: Emmanuel Kiptoo, Meshack Saruni, Andrew Peter, and John Omingo.
A New Era of Governance and Community Engagement
Onchong’a confirmed that the club is now fully registered and compliant with the Sports Act 2013, marking what he described as “a new era of governance, accountability, and growth.” An intensive membership drive is underway to attract players, fans, alumni, and supporters.
“We want to strengthen our community base and broaden participation in the club’s future. We want everyone who loves the game to be part of the journey,” he said.
This renewed focus on community engagement and compliance reflects the club’s commitment to building a sustainable and inclusive rugby environment. With a clear vision and strategic plans in place, Kisii Rugby Club is poised to make a strong return to the Kenya Cup and reestablish itself as a formidable force in Kenyan rugby.
