Reformed Nepali Congress Aims to Regain Public Trust: Pradip Paudel

Nepali Congress Faces Calls for Reform Ahead of Elections

Nepal is witnessing a growing call for internal reform within the Nepali Congress (NC), one of the country’s oldest and most influential political parties. Central member Pradip Paudel has recently emphasized the need for the party to reevaluate its strategies and adopt clear policy positions in preparation for the upcoming elections.

During a recent digital program hosted by Nagarik News titled “Frontline,” Paudel highlighted the importance of taking the recent Gen Z youth movement as a warning signal. He argued that the NC must engage in a period of soul searching and implement corrective measures to realign itself with the expectations of the public.

Paudel stressed that the party needs to acknowledge its past mistakes, particularly in areas such as corruption control and good governance. He pointed out that while the NC has achieved some positive outcomes during its time in power, these efforts were often overshadowed by a lack of clear communication on critical issues.

“Being in power, we made mistakes, but we also did some good work,” Paudel said. “However, our achievements were overshadowed because we could not clearly communicate our stance on corruption. This created a perception that all we did was wrong.”

To regain public trust, Paudel urged the party to conduct internal investigations and demonstrate a genuine commitment to good governance. He emphasized that if the NC can acknowledge its shortcomings and take a clear position on key issues, it will be able to restore confidence among the electorate.

He further noted that entering the elections without addressing important matters such as governance, constitutional amendments, and the elimination of corruption would not secure public support. According to Paudel, the party should clarify these issues through a general convention and elect new leadership to strengthen its position and avoid being on the defensive.

Paudel concluded by stating that even now, if the NC truly commits to reform and takes corrective measures, the people will once again place their trust in the party. He acknowledged that the warning has been given and that the time for action is now.
