Why Eric Chelle Faced NFF Before 24-Man Squad Announcement vs Gabon

Nigeria’s 24-Man Squad for 2026 FIFA World Cup Playoffs

Nigeria’s Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has finalized his 24-man squad for the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff match against Gabon. The team is set to face the Panthers on November 13, with the winner advancing to a final showdown against either the Democratic Republic of Congo or Cameroon in the Intercontinental playoffs.

Chelle, a 47-year-old tactician, guided Nigeria to a second-place finish in CAF qualification group C, earning a total of 17 points. With South Africa securing an automatic spot in the tournament, Nigeria now aims to claim Africa’s sole ticket to the intercontinental stage.

The selected squad consists of eight forwards, five midfielders, eight defenders, and three goalkeepers. This composition reflects Chelle’s strategy of balancing offensive firepower with defensive solidity as the team prepares for what promises to be a challenging series of matches.

NFF Explains Delay in Squad Announcement

An official from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has revealed the reason behind the delay in announcing the squad. According to reports, the delay was due to a minor disagreement between Chelle and the federation regarding the number of players to be included.

The source disclosed that Chelle wanted to expand the squad from 23 to 24 players, believing that having more players would provide greater flexibility in case of injuries or fatigue during the upcoming matches. Despite this, the NFF initially preferred a smaller squad to reduce costs.

“Coach Eric Chelle submitted his squad much earlier, and we were about to name it before Gabon. The issue was that Chelle demanded a bigger squad, while the NFF wanted the coach to only call up 23 players to save cost,” the source said.

“Chelle argued he would be a lot more comfortable with more than the usual 23 players because hopefully Nigeria will play two very important matches within a short time, and one cannot rule out injuries and fatigue.”

Chukwunonso Supports Chelle’s Decision

Nigeria sports journalist Arinzechi Chukwunonso has expressed support for Chelle’s decision to expand the squad. In an exclusive comment, Chukwunonso praised the coach’s confidence and belief in his own methods.

“I like the confidence of Eric Chelle; he knows what he wants, and the Nigeria Football Federation must help him succeed. The addition made by the Super Eagles coach is a welcome idea, and he is thinking two steps ahead of the NFF officials.”

Chukwunonso emphasized that Chelle’s approach demonstrates a long-term vision for the team, ensuring that they are well-prepared for the challenges ahead.

Why Chelle Included Suspended Player Semi Ajayi

One of the most notable inclusions in the squad is Semi Ajayi, despite the defender being suspended for the clash with Gabon. Footcare.ng reported that Ajayi has become one of the most reliable defenders for the Super Eagles since his debut.

Ajayi replaced captain William Troost-Ekong in the final two qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin Republic, showcasing Chelle’s trust in his abilities. The coach’s decision to include Ajayi highlights his faith in the player’s potential to contribute to the team’s success in the upcoming matches.
