Bujagali Recognized for Elevating Local Education

Community Appreciation for Bujagali Energy Limited’s Commitment

Residents in Jinja City who were impacted by the construction of the Bujagali Hydropower Plant have expressed their appreciation for Bujagali Energy Limited (BEL) for fulfilling its commitments as outlined in the memorandum of understanding signed prior to the project’s commissioning. The communities in Budondo, Ivunumber, Namizi, and Bujagali villages have acknowledged BEL’s ongoing efforts to enhance their lives through various development initiatives.

Mr. Haruna Kapampa, the LC1 Chairman of Bujagali Village, highlighted that children from affected families have received education as part of BEL’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs. He emphasized that the company has also provided vocational skill training for these children, along with access to clean water, health services, and electricity.

This commitment was evident during the recent commissioning ceremony of 36 residents who successfully completed a tailoring course at Nile Vocational Institute, fully funded by BEL. The event marked a significant milestone for the participants, who now have the skills to support themselves and their families.

Ms. Jesica Akiise, one of the graduates, shared her gratitude for the opportunity. She stated that the skills she acquired will enable her to earn a living independently. “I can now make money because I have the skills. People will bring clothes for sewing, and I’ll be able to support my family,” she said.

Mr. Alaister McDougall, General Manager of BEL, explained that the company’s education programs are designed to empower both students and unskilled residents in the affected areas. He mentioned that scholarships are offered to bright students, particularly those studying science, so they can eventually find employment at the power plant. To ensure equal opportunities, BEL also funds vocational training for residents who did not pursue higher education.

McDougall added that this initiative is an essential part of BEL’s CSR strategy, ensuring that community members directly benefit from the project. He noted that such efforts help build long-term relationships between the company and the local population.

Mr. Steven Kagoda, Inspector of Schools in Jinja City, praised BEL for supporting government initiatives in expanding access to education. He stated that partnerships like BEL’s reduce the burden on the government and encouraged the company to extend its programs to other communities due to high demand.

Key Achievements and Future Goals

  • Education Programs: BEL has implemented scholarship schemes for students excelling in science fields, aiming to provide them with future employment opportunities at the power plant.
  • Vocational Training: The company offers skill-based training for unskilled residents, ensuring they gain employable skills and contribute to the local economy.
  • Community Development: BEL has focused on improving access to clean water, health services, and electricity, significantly enhancing the quality of life for affected communities.
  • Collaboration with Local Authorities: The company works closely with local leaders and institutions to ensure that its initiatives align with community needs and government priorities.

Impact on Local Livelihoods

The initiatives undertaken by BEL have had a profound impact on the livelihoods of local residents. By investing in education and vocational training, the company has empowered individuals to become self-reliant and contribute to the economic growth of their communities. This approach not only addresses immediate needs but also fosters long-term sustainability.

The success of these programs demonstrates the importance of corporate involvement in community development. BEL’s efforts serve as a model for other organizations looking to create meaningful and lasting change in the regions where they operate.

As the company continues to expand its initiatives, it remains committed to fostering strong relationships with the communities it serves. This partnership ensures that the benefits of the Bujagali Hydropower Plant extend beyond energy production, contributing to the overall well-being and prosperity of the people in Jinja City.
