Kenya’s Top Runners Set to Compete in International Cross Country Events
Kenya is set to showcase its top talent this weekend as two of its most promising athletes, Maurine Chebor and Cynthia Chepkirui, take part in the World Athletics Cross Country Tour Gold meetings in Seville, Spain, and Cardiff, Wales. These events serve as crucial preparatory competitions for the upcoming World Cross Country Championships.
Maurine Chebor: A Rising Star in Cross Country
Maurine Chebor, the National Cross Country champion, will be competing in Seville, where she faces a strong field of competitors, including Olympic 3,000m steeplechase champion Winfred Yavi of Bahrain. Chebor recently claimed the national title on October 25 at the Eldoret Sports Club with a time of 34:16, edging out Brenda Jepchumba (34:19) and Glorious Jepkirui (34:26). This performance marks an improvement from her runner-up finish in February’s nationals, where she clocked 34:33 behind Brillian Kipkoech (34:30).
Chebor sees the Seville race as a vital step in her preparation for the World Cross Country Championships, which are scheduled for January 10 in Tallahassee, Florida. She expressed her excitement about the opportunity to compete alongside experienced runners like Beatrice Chebet, the defending champion.
The Kenyan women’s team for the World Cross Country Championships includes a formidable lineup of athletes such as Beatrice Chebet, Agnes Ng’etich, Brenda Chepchumba, Glorious Jepkirui, Lilian Kasait, and Rebecca Mwangi (reserve). Chebor has also made a name for herself on the roads this year, winning the Nijmegen 5K in 15:01 in April and finishing third at the Tokyo 5K in 14:40.
Her main rival in Seville will be Yavi, who won silver at the World Championships in Tokyo with a time of 8:56.46. Other contenders include compatriot Celestine Jepkorir, Kazakhstan’s Daisy Jepkemei, Portugal’s Mariana Machado, and Norway’s Kristin Eikrem.
Cynthia Chepkirui: A New Challenge in Cardiff
In Cardiff, 17-year-old Cynthia Chepkirui will make her first appearance outside Africa, leading Kenya’s junior team. The African U18 3,000m champion recently claimed the national U20 title in 20:38, ahead of Mirriam Kibet (20:49) and Lonah Cherono (21:00). Chepkirui will also represent Kenya in Florida alongside Mirriam Chemutai, Lonah Cherono, Mercy Chepng’eno, Caren Chepng’eno, Mercy Chelimo, and Anastasia Cheptoo (reserve).
Joining her in Cardiff is Sheila Jebet, last year’s runner-up, who has been in excellent form this season. She finished second (21:19) at the International La Mandria Meeting in Italy and won the Cross Cup de Hannut in Belgium in 31:01.
Kenya’s Strong Presence in Both Events
With both Chebor and Chepkirui leading Kenya’s senior and junior teams, the nation is looking to secure podium finishes in both Seville and Cardiff. Their participation highlights the depth of talent in Kenyan athletics and sets the stage for what promises to be an exciting weekend of competition.
