Donald Trump’s Ambitions for Washington Commanders’ New Stadium
Donald Trump has expressed a clear desire for the Washington Commanders to name their new $3.7 billion stadium after him, according to recent reports. This potential move has sparked considerable interest and speculation about the future of the team and its relationship with the former president.
Trump is scheduled to attend his first NFL game of the season on Sunday afternoon when the Commanders face the Detroit Lions. His presence at the game has already generated significant attention. Following the announcement of his attendance, it was revealed that Trump will be joining Commanders owner Josh Harris in a VIP suite. This meeting could open the door for discussions on various topics, including the naming of the new stadium.
According to a White House official, Trump has made it clear that he would like the stadium named after him. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed this during an interview with ESPN, stating, “That would be a beautiful name, as it was President Trump who made the rebuilding of the new stadium possible.” When asked further questions, Leavitt declined to elaborate but added, “It’s what the president wants, and it will probably happen.”

ESPN reported that the Commanders are anticipating a conversation with Trump regarding the stadium’s name, although no formal discussions have taken place yet. The team is set to return to the site of their former home, RFK Stadium, as part of plans to build a stunning $3.7 million stadium. Currently, the Commanders play at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland, but they aim to open a new venue in 2030 on the same RFK site where the team won three Super Bowls in the 1980s and ’90s.
Congress passed a bill transferring the RFK Stadium land to the city, which was signed by then-President Joe Biden in early January. This move paved the way for the development of a mixed-use area, including the new stadium for the Commanders.
Trump has previously mentioned the stadium project in May, when he confirmed that the 2027 NFL Draft would be held at the National Mall in Washington, DC. During the announcement, Trump’s desk was filled with personalized Washington football memorabilia, including a ‘Trump’ No. 47 replica jersey.
The National Mall has the capacity to hold several hundred thousand spectators, although the exact number for the 2027 NFL Draft has not been announced yet. Washington DC has never hosted the event since it began changing venues in 2015. Previously, the draft was primarily held in New York and Philadelphia.
Trump also discussed the Commanders’ plans to return to the RFK Stadium site, which had not been approved at the time. He praised the team’s plans, stating, “I don’t think there is a better site anywhere in the world than that site.” He took some credit for the plan, saying, “It sat there for years and people were talking about stadiums and 25 different sites. I said they’re not talking about the best site. That’s the best site there is.”
As the Commanders prepare for their return to RFK Stadium, many are wondering if Trump’s influence will shape the future of the team. Will the stadium be named after him? How will this affect the team’s identity and legacy? These questions remain unanswered, but one thing is clear: Trump’s involvement in the project has already generated significant attention and debate.
